That's going to be a tough one to draw African-American's out from Christianity because it's so ingrained into their culture, at least in the southern states anyways.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I don't think it's limited to southern states either, here in Canada (Greater Toronto Area) blacks are typically very religious. Most attend pentecostal churches, that I've noticed at least.

Ditto, London. Happy-clappy church next to my work. I swear the service goes on for about six hours.

Desmond Tutu had a good take on it though-
"The white-man came to Africa with the bible and we had the land. He said "Let us prey". When we opened our eyes, he had the land and we had the bible." :)

I guess it makes a change from the cops targetting them.

~in context

The percentage of black non-believers in the U.S. is small but increasing. Most have difficulty meeting other black non-believers or finding many who are involved in secular organizations. The internet has made many connections possible; however, the common feelings expressed by black non-believers are those of isolation, loneliness, and alienation. Often the remedy for these feelings is activism. This activism includes diligently searching for and befriending other non-believers, working with as many other non-believers as possible to address social ills, continuing to be educated about the factual world, providing positive expressions for secular ideas through writing and public speaking, and strengthening the secular community by supporting existing organizations as well as creating dynamic new ones. Unfettered activism is captured in the purpose of the Day of Solidarity for Black Non-Believers.

I don't see this ad as atheistic; I see it as agnostic (Thomas Huxley 1876). Encouraging people with doubts to explore them is a healthy exercise.

Yes, and that's their strength.

Not really. Atheism is a certitude that "god does not exist." Agnosticism (Huxley 1876) is the acknowledgement that one does not know that for certain.

At least, I'm not both, by that definition.

Theism refers to belief. Atheism is a lack of belief.

Gnosticism refers to knowledge. Agnosticism is a lack of knowledge.

Most atheists are, in fact, agnostic atheists, in that they do not believe in a god, but do not profess ultimate knowledge to say that there definitely is not one. Not believing in the existence of something that has no evidence is a perfectly sensible approach to take. I don't KNOW that there isn't a weightless, invisible pink unicorn hovering over my right shoulder, but without any proof, or indeed any reason to believe it, I don't believe it to be. Thus, on the topic of invisible pink unicorns hovering over my right shoulder, I am an agnostic atheist.

Maybe it should be stickied or something.
