A massive blast rocked downtown Beirut on Tuesday, flattening much of the port, damaging buildings and blowing out windows and doors as a giant mushroom cloud rose above the capital.

Lebanese Red Cross official Georges Kettaneh said there hundreds of casualties, both dead and wounded.

A civil defence official on the scene of the blast said his men had evacuated dozens to hospitals and that there were still bodies inside the port, many of them under debris.

Looks like an ammo dump from the flashes seen here.

Some say explosives others say fireworks, a few weeks ago we had an explosion in Turkey and then fireworks banned in İstanbul.

Im happy with the decision its noise was bothering on the other hand killing birds.

The red colour means it's not Ammonium nitrate or explosives (i.e. weapons) apparently. Thunderf00t weighs in:

The thing that strikes me from that video is that the ammonium nitrate factory explosion that Thunderf00t says looks completely different to Beirut looks exactly the same to me. :dunno:

Edit: and that when he overlays the explosion on the pier using Nukemap, he's picked the slightly smaller (parallel sided) pier one to the east of the actual site (which is tapered).

You can hear and see either fireworks or ammunition in some of these.

Some minister or other has stated that a ship cargo was impounded and had been stored at the location for several years. A phosphate of some description.

Completely agree. The nitrate factory explosion looks the same as the Beirut explosion.

The common thing is the gaseous cloud front expanding prior to the smoke. Is that just water vapour though? To my eye the big difference is the colour where the Beirut cloud is strongly reddish orange and the Texas cloud is grey/black.

Additionally, there are numerous firecracker-like pops clearly in many of the videos before it goes off.

It doesn't mean the cause of the explosion was different. It could just be a result of what other materials were stored nearby.

I think that's largely because the sun was shining in Beirut. The Texas explosion looks very similar up to the point where the person recording drops the camera. For the same point where the Beirut cloud is glowing reddish, the Texas camera is pointing at the ground. Thuderf00t, in his commentary, actually says he thinks the difference is that the Texas cloud is "very red", which is what leads him to conclude that it's different to Beirut, whereas your chosen stills show the Beirut cloud as very red, leading you to suggest that it's different from Texas. :dunno:

Anyway, rather than looking at the clouds, I suspect the exact nature of what exploded will come from the storage manifests.
