Bombing and mass-shooting in Oslo, Norway

#1  Postby John P. M. » Jul 22, 2011 2:01 pm

[ONLY TOPIC TITLE EDITED July 23rd]

Very fresh, I don't have much info or links in English, sorry; here's the first report (in Norwegian) from the largest and most 'serious' newspaper:

http://www.aftenposten.no/nyheter/iriks ... 180673.ece

[edited to be more... rational - too early to conclude what happened, although the TV-news here continually state it was a bomb]

Re: Powerful bomb goes off in Oslo, Norway

BBC News website wrote:A large explosion has hit near government headquarters in the Norwegian capital Oslo.

The blast is thought to have caused damage to the offices of Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and a number of other official buildings.

Witnesses have said several people were injured in the incident in the centre of the city.

Pictures from the scene showed shattered windows and smoke drifting in the streets.

A journalist with Norwegian public radio station NRK said the headquarters of tabloid newspaper VG were also damaged.

"I see that some windows of the VG building and the government headquarters have been broken. Some people covered with blood are lying in the street," the Associated Press news agency quoted him as saying.

It's a little chaotic at the moment, but they have at least said it was a bomb that went off, although I guess this is so fresh (it happened about half an hour ago), that it may not be. Rumors say the explosion occurred in the cafeteria section of the government headquarters, but this is not confirmed.

I edited the topic in case it isn't a bomb, but at the moment, the TV station I'm watching is saying it was.

From the updated Aftenposten article:

- You can't walk through here, because there are still two bombs we haven't located, the police officers at the scene has told Aftenposten.no's reporters.

Well - if it was a bomb, and it currently seems it was, we have the same enemy everyone else has nowadays.

That said, it could of course be a disgruntled Norwegian as well, angry at the government for some reason. It's just that disgruntled Norwegians usually never do much more than write angry opinion pieces in newspapers and online.

The destruction is worse than most of the first videos and pictures I've seen seem to convey; it's not just glass splinters on the pavement, but lots of debris in certain places. At least one person has now been confirmed dead.

How do they know there are 2 more bombs?
Has a group claimed responsibility and told someone?

Sorry, I don't have much more to 'report', but the news is all over the net by now, so if you search Google for "news explosion norway" (without quotation marks) you'll get quite a few sources in English (ignore the "boiler explosion" video that turns up though; it's from 2008).

It seems it may be a car bomb, as a car has been found overturned and burnt out at the place it happened, with a "pit" underneath it, according to the TV-news.

Well - you know how it gets in such situations; chaos everywhere, so who knows exactly what was said.

No one has claimed responsibility for it yet.

Police has now officially confirmed that it was a bomb, according to the news I'm watching (NRK).

I'm watching it on CNN (CNN Europe, I guess), so it seems it's been taken up by the largest networks now.

I live about 15 kilometers (in a direct line) from the blast, but I didn't notice (I was cranking music on my not-so-insubstantial stereo at the time though, so...), but some around here heard it and thought is was thunder, apparently.
