Demo at anti-gay march - France

This photo has been doing the rounds.

HuffPo wrote:The picture, taken by AFP photographer Gérard Julien, went viral on social media and has all the ingredients to become a symbolic image of the movement in favor of marriage equality.

On Tuesday, demonstrators gathered in 75 French cities to oppose the bill which would allow gay marriage and adoption. The picture was shot during the rally in the city of Marseille and as the two women are seen kissing in the forefront, faces of shocked protesters can be seen in the background.

Interviewed by French gay magazine Têtu the two young women explained they are both straight, but wanted to draw attention to the issue with a pure and simple gesture of solidarity.

The photographer in his blog wrote:-

If it was a group of men in the background, they'd probably be cheering.

I love the looks of shock on some of those faces.

BTW, what is the legal status of same sex marriage in France? You never seem to hear about this.

OK. I've been remiss not posting about this. Maybe I have?

The Hollande Government is trying to introduce same-sex marriage NOW. There has been a fierce rearguard religious and conservative action with some mayors (I HAVE posted this) declaring that even if the law is passed, they will not conduct such marriages.

OK, I vaguely remember you posting that. It just doesn't seem to me to make the news as much as SSM in the US or UK. Probably just for simple reasons of language.

Exactly so. There is loads of written stuff in French and a fair bit on French TV also.

Gay marriage in Western Europe at least is happening, its either legal or in the process of being legalised (might take a couple of years) with relatively little opposition.

Eastern Europe is a little different due to quite a lot of people still taking religion seriously over there

Oh, I think there's a little more to it than that with regard to the U.S....

France 24 wrote:A demonstration against same-sex parenting was interrupted Wednesday by its very target, when two women interrupted the event by sharing a kiss.

The “Un papa une maman" ("one dad one mum") demonstration featured a performer sporting a spandex suit and wings, fluttering between “mamas” and “papas” before gaining steam from the cheers of both. The performance was supposed to demonstrate that a child needs both a mother and father.
