The absurdity of Trump declaring a state of emergency over such a comparatively minuscule if not non-existent problem is...salient.

Potholer54, probably one of the most well know climate change Youtubers, has two really good videos on his channel about how letting the free market actually innovate and create new technologies for clean/renewable energy is the step forward. But you have to regulate non-renewables and subsidize renewables.

I don’t recall those. Links?

Was at work, but here you go!

Interesting video, with lots of interesting science, however, I'm sorry to say, basically VERY dangerous and toxic, on balance, catering to widespread apathetic desires for the most part. No wonder he's so popular.

So Thatcher announced gov would be tackling AGW in '89, and the free market system has been firing on all cylinders ever since, yet we find ourselves in this dire situation now. How Potholer54 can then espouse that the free market should be left to tackle AGW and gov intervention is unnecessary when time is so short...it's really not worth the gamble, to say the least.

I didn't know China was doing so well on AGW, but if so I'll bet their nominally communist gov lent a hand in their development and deployment of green tech. And no Potholer54, curbing overwhelmingly unnecessary economic activity is not the same as plummeting us back to the 1850s FFS

I'll watch the other video now

No real problems with the second vid, just tons of good science.

They are doing well, in a way, it would appear, with double the amount of electricity generation than the number 2 country, USA. However:

Although China currently has the world's largest installed capacity of hydro, solar and wind power, its energy needs are so large that in 2015 renewable sources provided only 24% of its electricity generation, with most of the remainder provided by coal power plants.

There are also indeed numerous incentive and lubrication schemes in place to facilitate renewables, implemented by the Chinese gov eg:

The Chinese government is implementing multiple policies to promote renewable energy. From 2008 to January 2012, China held the top spot in clean energy investment.[39] The Renewable Energy Law passed in 2005 explicitly states in its first chapter that the development and the usage of renewable energy is a prioritized area in energy development.[40] The Twelfth Five-Year Plan, the current plan, also places great emphasis on green energy.[41] Detailed incentive policies and programs include the Golden Sun program, which provides financial subsidies, technology support and market incentives to facilitate the development of the solar power industry;[42] the Suggestions on Promoting Wind Electricity Industry in 2006, which offers preferential policies for wind power development;[43] and many other policies. Besides promoting policies, China has enacted a number of policies to standardize renewable energy products, to prevent environmental damage, and to regulate the price of green energy. These policies include, but are not limited to Renewable Energy Law,[44] the Safety Regulations of Hydropower Dams[45] and the National Standard of Solar Water Heaters.[46]

"Extinction Rebellion are on point." Not all of them.

Went to a presentation by one of their....er...members which was full of factual inaccuracies (eg. flood basalt events causing 4 out 5 mass extinctions in the past due to CO2 emissions (eg. blocking sunlight/photosynthesis/foodchain collapse is more likely) and there being reliable data we have only a "5% chance of preventing a 3 degree rise" (such a statistic can obviously not be calculated with any real degree of accuracy) and hysterical predictions of fascism, mass penury in the west and a rise in sexism, amongst other things. All this delivered by a man with a died purple beard who appeared to be on the brink of tears for the whole 2 hour presentation and peppered the talk with "silences" to "grieve and reflect." He also said that direct action should always be peaceful and non-destructive as that kind of direct action never accomplished anything. The Stonewall riots spring to mind so fuck that train. Lehahahame.

I've been continually on the brink of describing him as repping the "clinically depressed warlock look" on facebook. I seem to recall warlocks were very effective in battle when playing as the eldar race in 40k....but that's not real life...nor human...and I don't think they were depressed.
