Father who shot down drone hovering over his house as his daughters sunbathed is arrested and charged - sparking new privacy debate

William H. Merideth, 47, shot down the $1,800 drone after being alerted by by his two daughters
Another neighbor has told how it was hovering over her 16-year-old daughter too
The owner of the drone claims he was only trying to take pictures of a friend's house
Merideth has been charged with first-degree criminal mischief and first-degree wanton endangerment for shooting the gadget
The FAA is still scrambling to design rules about drone use and control

A father has been arrested after shooting down an $1,800 drone that was reportedly hovering over his two sunbathing daughters.

William H. Merideth, 47, from Kentucky was charged with first-degree criminal mischief and first-degree wanton endangerment.

The owner of the drone claims he was only trying to take pictures of a friend's house when Merideth shot at the device, sending it crashing into a field near his yard last weekend.

Not sure about shooting it down where he was as he had neighbours close by? But other than that, destroying the machine I applaud. The owners, 4 guys apparently were then going to confront him until he got his Glock out and said, "There's gonna be another shooting if you cross the sidewalk"

I have no sympathy for the loss of their drone - LOL.

Do they do a crime of 'first-degree being a little scamp'?

How much of the airspace and ground below do you 'own' or have rights to.

In the UK its easy its zero and zero, there are privacy laws but no rules on who can dig under or fly over your property that are specific to you (there are obviously air traffic rules and collapsing the street due to digging a tunnel won't go down well with health and safery)

Criminal Mischief in the First Degree

1st degree criminal mischief is defined by Kentucky statutes as intentionally or wantonly defacing, destroying, or damaging any property which you have no authority to do so and the value of such damage is greater than $1,000.

Criminal mischief in the 1st degree is a Class D felony punishable by one to five years in state prison and $10,000 in fines.

That produces more questions than it answers

What's 2nd degree criminal mischief, how can mischief be a felony, does wantonly defacing mean if you scratch a park bench with your initials you can get 5 years in jail

If an idiot is going to fly $1800 worth of gear over other people's land if will just have to accept the consequences.

Try flying one of these things over military areas. It would not last long. Yep this is going to be a real problem.

In a residential area, definitely. Falling bullet injuries and fatalities are rare, but do happen.

People applaud it being destroyed, but don't like him using an evil nasty gun on it...

How the hell else do you bring down a flying object way up in the air above your yard, apart from a firearm? Personally I'd have used a shotgun or a .22...no real danger from falling projectiles.

Agreed with the comments about firing into the air but depending on location and direction shotgun is ok....I mean it's kentucky, what's the world coming to if you can't shoot into the air with abandon.

I can't see any around permitting folk to destroy drones (they arent drones ffs, they are remote controlled toys) that stray onto their property. Otherwise it opens to door to all kinds of harassment.

But people who aren't shotgun totin' hicks need some kind of defence too. Maybe a pneumatic net gun, like they bring down arnie in running man with. Some kind of shot that trails nylon strands to entangle the rotors.

A second 'drone' to fly over the intruder and drops a net/nylon strands into its rotors.

Or a battery of water-bottle rockets would be pretty cool, but tricky to pull off.

Has he been charged in the first degree? A lawyer should knock that down a rung, since he thought it was spying on his family.
If it doesn't say "minimum mandatory sentence", a first offender probably wouldn't see near those penalties. Probably probation or a smaller fine. Though he may also have to pay restitution for the drone if found guilty. Maybe they could take the drone guy to civil court too. Though it would have helped if there was footage from the drone.
