A Cumberland County woman argues that the state Motor Vehicle Commission’s alleged denial of issuing an “8THEIST” license plate violated her First Amendment rights, according to a lawsuit filed on Thursday.

I'm amazed everytime I see a news item like this one.
"Respect for personal beliefs = "I am going to tell you all what I think of YOU, but don't dare retort and tell what you think of ME because...it's my personal belief". Hmm. A bully's charter and no mistake."

I think Baptist is a bad word, implying that the driver is a fuckwit. It should be banned

I heard this is the same state where they already lost over an ATHE1ST licence plate. If so, well, they do seem rather slow to learn.

I just to the Queensland personalised plate website to check the availability of "ATHEIST" as a personalised plate in the "create a plate" section. It said "not available"...which usually means someone already has it. If you type in swear words like "FUCKER", it comes up differently on the screen with harsh red lettering and it says plate is unavailable, so it would seem that "ATHEIST" is not just a word caught by a filter...someone has already purchased that particular plate.
It did however give plenty of options that were available, like "ATHE1ST", so there doesn't seem to be a restriction on the actual word itself. You can't do that with swear words (substitute a number for a letter for example to "sneak one in").

Of course, to get that many letters you have to choose the "Prestige plate" with up to seven letters...and it costs $3295...and while I'm a committed atheist, shit, I'm not that committed...
