This is Madison, Wisconsin. I didn't see a clear indicator in the video of which Madison it was. There are lots of Madisons in the US.

Protect them from what discrimination?

Do you have a link to the law, please?

Here comes the airplane. ZOOM! Open the hangar door:

The city ordinance which was amended can be found as a PDF online -- Madison General Ordinance Chapter 39 [the amended portion is in 39.03]

For the specific language of the amended section, see madison.legistar.com.

I suppose there's nothing anti-American about referring to the country as a shithole either.

Of course not. Why is it anti-American? It is a sorry state to be in when you have to bring in laws to protect one section of society.

Everybody here is protected by article one of our constitution. No specific law is required.

Article 1
All persons in the Netherlands shall be treated equally in equal
circumstances. Discrimination on the grounds of religion, belief, political
opinion, race or sex or on any other grounds whatsoever shall not be
permitted

Is that really the direct translation of the Dutch constitution as 'any other grounds whatsoever' basically a football team can't discriminate against you if you can't kick a football :). While England seems to already apply that policy I don't think its actually compulsory

It is a direct translation and the official one.

In Dutch:
Artikel 1
Allen die zich in Nederland bevinden, worden in gelijke gevallen gelijk
behandeld. Discriminatie wegens godsdienst, levensovertuiging, politieke
gezindheid, ras, geslacht of op welke grond dan ook, is niet toegestaan

Is "any other grounds whatsoever".

And in "Jerome world" once a law is in place, that's it, job done. Everyone's behaviour changes magically overnight.

IIRC, several states have laws in place that make it illegal to run for office unless you profess a belief in a creator.

Then for obvious reasons you have a very silly even if well meaning constitution (its not like the more sensible EU charter/treaties where they specifically list the exceptions to general 'rights'?)

I thought God's own country was Australia? It's this kind of stupid shit that gives ammunition to those who try to dismiss criticism as just anti-Americanism. The USA is also a country where the non-believers of Madison were able to get this legislation enacted.

There is nothing wrong with 'discrimination' in itself if its relevant to your ability to a job or receive medical treatment (a man doesnt have a right to an abortion but can't get pregnant). It's a pretty basic requirement for any society

The Dutch constitution has fallen into the trap of silly woolly language , I'm sure there are lots of legal rulings that put limits on your constitution but why put silly open ended statements in it in the first place

Americans take offence at every criticism of their wonderful country. One more wont make any difference. I have been written off as "Anti-American" so is does not affect me anyway.

I always thought America had a constitution? So why are these laws necessary?

Oh my god Scot, you proved his point.
America is a shithole isn't so bad (even though entirely untrue, at least without specification of a certain place in America. I can show you pictures of pristine beauty. Taken myself, behind my house. Though there is a lot of moose and hare shit back there. Woops.)

But "Americans take offence at every criticism of their wonderful country." is exactly the kind of shit that Briton meant. The way it's written, you're implying all Americans. All Americans think we're the most wonderful, right? We've been taught that at school?
Though you're right, I already wrote you off of as anti-everything not Dutch.

I watched the video again and it's not that they got new legislation enacted it was the non-religious getting added to a long list of the protected groups of the Madison Equal Opportunities Ordinance.

Scot...does the Netherlands have any anti-discrimination/equal opportunities legislation or does the constitution suffice?

The constitution is the law. Nothing further required. We dont have a list of protected groups as everyone is protected.

The only thing protected is professions and like all lists they present problems.
