Actually, I want to apologise for posting that video. I instantly regret it and bringing this thread up again. I even hovered over post and still clicked. But I'm not retracting it.

I think I'm done with this guy. He's too vapid and not stimulating or challenging enough for me. In fact he's the exact opposite because all he really does is state what he thinks is the obvious, rolls his eyes a bit, and people who don't want to be intellectually challenged in any way can walk off believing an argument is settled when really it hasn't even been addressed. He's only interesting to me in the context that people think he's interesting and I find that interesting. But maybe not so much any more. This fad has passed.

Having seen a few people suffer from this, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy so I'd hope he has a swift and speedy recovery.

Still, I'm wondering if the legion of fans, who seem to regard him as an infallible authority on pretty much every topic imaginable, might start to see some cracks in the facade. Probably not all, but maybe some of them at least.

His family of course lies about him being misdiagnosed. From what I can tell, he wanted to go cold turkey which of course no sane doctor in the USA (or Canada for that matter) would ever have you do with benzos. So naturally he went to Russia to find someone who would put him into a medically induced coma so he could sleep his way through the withdrawal. The result? Neurological damage and he can't walk.

This apparently stemmed from a "autoimmune reaction to food". Perhaps on an unrelated note, he apparently likes to brag about only eating beef.

Curiously, he also fancies himself an expert on addiction.

It's obviously terrible the suffering he's gone through with all this, but it is also seems a bit like when an anti-vaxxer finally gets bit in the ass by their own idiocy.

Yeah, you'd think he'd know better given that his most widely cited scientific work was all in the realms of substance addiction. That's the one subject he could actually speak with some authority on, yet still he couldn't help himself.

Still, I guess his messiah complex now comes with its own resurrection myth.

This is the medical equivalent of someone denying gravity as an ideological hoax and jumping out the window only to find that the forces of the universe don't give two hoots regardless of conviction.

AIDS denialists have died of AIDS. This is to be expected from true believers.

His kid is telling the press Russian doctors are uniquely brave to "medically detox" patients as was done to her dad. They're actually just less susceptible to malpractice suits. Plenty of doctors in North America would be happy to do it if there weren't severe consequences.

Fuck him. He's a big fan of people taking responsibility for the shit they bring into their own lives, and he's got enough flaws of his own to spawn a 990 page thread, some of which (collossal ego, rejection of rules put in place for good reasons, etc) have got him where he is now.

I mean, I feel sorry for him having to go through such awful shit, but in the same limited way I feel sorry for the person I know who has to deal with emphysema after smoking heavily for 60 years.

His toxic belief system, and the undeserved respect it gets from various sectors, causes real harm to other people. In some way it's only fair that the toxicity of his beliefs comes back on him personally, not just on others. In it's own unfortunate way, it's a just outcome.

He has written two questionable and widely criticized books and is a Tenured prof at University of Toronto. There is nothing on the whole impressive in that compared with the wealth of of tenured University of Toronto profs. His most impressive accomplishments are his click count on the internet and his being dubiously platformed in "debates." As Ani said, he is vapid and wrong about the science he cites most of the time.
