Las Vegas Shooting Near Mandalay Bay

#1  Postby chango369 » Oct 02, 2017 9:19 am

One suspect, a local, dead, with police searching for a woman said to have been his companion.

A gunman in a Las Vegas hotel opened fire Sunday night at a concert outside, sending thousands of people fleeing as SWAT units searched for the attacker. At least 20 people were killed and more than 100 others injured, hospital officials said.

The shooting happened near the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. Video posted online showed the country singer Jason Aldean performing outside the hotel at Route 91 Harvest, a country music festival, interrupted by the sound of automatic gunfire. The music stopped, and concertgoers ducked for cover. “Get down,” one shouted. “Stay down,” screamed another.

Several SWAT teams were sent to the hotel immediately after the first reports of the shooting at 10:08 p.m., and officers reported being pinned down by gunfire, according to emergency radio traffic. Shortly before midnight the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that “one suspect is down,” and soon thereafter the police said they did not believe there were any more active gunmen.

Saw this a couple of hours ago when nothing was known about the shooter and the comments there were a number of people immediately blaming Islam.

I thought, at the time, that statistically it was more likely to be a white guy.

White dude, might be Stephen paddock, age 64, sex offender, lived in Vegas area. Death toll at least 20, more than 100 people injured. Holy fuck. He fired from the 32nd floor with a fully automatic weapon and lots and lots of ammo into a packed concert crowd.

White guy, so it's not terrorism, right ?

ETA : French news reporting 2 events this morning : this one, and a guy who attacked people and killed 2 in Marseille's train station.
The attack in Marseille is already labelled as terrorist (but not islamic), when the words "attack" and "terrorist" are not mentioned in the Las Vegas article.

If only the crowd had more "good guys with guns" to kill the bad guys with guns.

Whether it was a terrorist attack or not depends on the motive.

If it's just some arsehole who fired into the crowd because he got pissed off by the loud music as he tried to sleep while tweaking we're looking at a simple mass murder.

Was it a fully automatic rifle, the kind everyone needs for home defence?

Except in both cases, we don't have any information on the perpetrator's motivations.Yet, there is already a difference in the label. That's what's wrong here.

The videos that are on TV news reports sound like a military style weapon on full auto.
If he was high up and had a good view over the venue, combined with the lack of cover for a packed crowd in such an open air concert space, high powered weapon on full auto, plenty of ammunition, then the death toll will be substantial.

Some of the salvoes you can hear sound like he's shooting around 50 bullets before he has to reload. Ideal for home defense when you are attacked by an entire platoon in your bedroom.

Weapon discussion will revive again after that, its impsosible to kill 50 person and wound tens others without an assult rifle.

My condolences.

edit: hotel administration/security will be in big trouble, how can someone take such a rifle to a hotel ?

My sympathies to those those injured and the families of those killed.

It boggles my mind to think that there are people who think the Second Amendment is worth this.

In a suitcase

Last month a woman carried inside Conrad a small handgun and killed her lover discussion about how she get it to her room went on days. In the end they understood she placed it inside a metal makeup case and security didnt ask her to open it.

If he just put it in a suitcase and walked in from front door there is a serious security problem, this isnt a small motel.

I have never been asked to show the contents of my suitcase when entering a hotel.
