Parents warned kissing children on the lips is too sexual

A doctor has warned parents against kissing their children on the lips, arguing it is “too sexual”.

Many parents will see it as a simple sign of parental affection, but Dr Charlotte Reznick has warned the mouth is an erogenous zone which “can be stimulating” and subsequently cause confusion for children.

The author of ‘The Power of Your Child’s Imagination: How to Transform Stress and Anxiety Into Joy and Success’, told The Sun that children might associate kissing with sexual or romantic activity between parents and then wonder why their parents were engaging in the same activity with them too.

The suggestion has been derided by other child psychologists who say there is no harm in such displays of affection. Clinical psychologist Sally-Anne McCormack told the newspaper: “There is absolutely no way that kissing a young child on the lips is confusing for them in any way.

“That’s like saying breastfeeding is confusing. Some people might have issues with it, but it isn’t any more sexual than giving a baby a back rub.”
"Respect for personal beliefs = "I am going to tell you all what I think of YOU, but don't dare retort and tell what you think of ME because...it's my personal belief". Hmm. A bully's charter and no mistake."

Oh, FFS.

I will admit virtually all my friends think it's weird that my family kiss on the mouth. I don't care.

Dr Charlotte Reznick needs her vacuous head smacked against a wall.

Bit yucky ...lipstick n all....bit age dependent too...Uncle Bertie snogging his 13 year old niece a tad dodgy.

I see no point in starting it at all...kids get all sorts of viruses

A mature 10 year getting bussed by her 7 year cuz on the mouth might lead to an epic smack down.

Seriously tho ....I think too many adults take liberties in an intrusive way into kid's personal space.

One thing if the kid initiates ...quite another if it's the adult ....I really don't think kids should be obligated to put up with it.

The article isn't about violating children's personal space. It's about consentual kissing on the mouth between parents and kids. No physical affection a child doesn't consent to is acceptable.

I have kissed older male family members on the mouth my entire life. It's never been remotely sexual. I've never been confused by it. Why the only kissing on the mouth some people can think of his slurpy, tongue-y, lingering smooching, I don't know because it's most certainly not what people like me who kiss their family on the mouth engage in. My dad's a dude in his fifties. I date a lot of guys in their fifties. The kissing I do with my dad vs. my dates has NOTHING in common. People being unable to seperate kissing on the mouth and sex though is their problem, not mine. Unless parents are slipping their kid the tongue, they're not going to be "confused". If people are creeped out when I kiss my grandfather at the hospital, that's entirely their problem.

I also doubt there's an increased rate of viral illnesses amongst kids who kiss their parents on the mouth. I certainly never contracted oral herpes.

I rest my case :D

“There is absolutely no way that kissing a young child on the lips is confusing for them in any way.

From the article - where is that limited to the child initiating ???

Pff. We kiss on the mouth in our family. I kiss my daughter on the mouth, I am kissed by my relatives on the mouth. There is nothing sexual about it. The main problem for me is that the mouth must be completely dry, as a moist mouth makes me heave.
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

Maybe Dr Charlotte Reznick finds it sexual - she should go on a pedo watch list just in case.

Bread crumbs all over the lips makes it dry too but that would make me heave I think. What about if they have a bit of mustard on the corner or a zit right near the lip? What if you go to kiss them on the lips and only then notice the pimple do you quickly divert to the cheek? Doesn't that make things a bit awkward?

No one in my family has ever tried to kiss me while sporting a mouth zit or residual food or wet lips. I imagine all those things would make matters awkward, yes. It's my family though. They wouldn't kiss me with a wet mouth and if they had some food or a zit I noticed at the last second, I'd tell them.

Nobody in my family kisses on the lips. I still don't think it's weird or sexual.

We should really only be side-hugging our children. Those frontal hugs are much too sexual.

No hugging, hugging is for sissies. Begrudging nods and cowboy hat-tips only.

Hat-tips sound a bit close to validating feelings. None of that between parents and kids, I say!
