The sentencing guidance for child rape shows a range of 8 - 13 years for child rape so it's lower. However, extreme cases can also carry a life sentence.

'1st degree murder' err don't think there is such a concept in the UK, the only two types of killing bar negligience is deliberately killing someone and killing someone when you only mean to hurt them (to a relatively low level, ie punching them a single time and they fall over and hit the pavement etc' which is manslaughter.

Yes I meant the UK term "murder" rather than "1st degree murder" (must have picked that up from films!). To clarify what I said above - the sentence for murder in the UK is life imprisonment with a tariff set on how many years they spend in prison before they can be considered for parole. The minimum tariff a judge can recommend seems to be 15 years at the moment (for age 18 or older). There's lots more information here if anyone wants to get more details: http://sentencingcouncil.judiciary.gov. ... elines.htm

Not convinced by any of those numbers from wikipedia I thought the average life tariff was 12 years never mind there being a minimum of 15

I haven't looked much at the numbers on wiki although they appear to be lifted from The Criminal Justice Act 2003 - there's much more detail about sentencing at the other link I gave, which is the official sentence guidelines.

EDIT - I've checked them and they look correct from here: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2003/44/schedules (Criminal Justice Act 2003 schedule 21)
