We don't vote for the PM though - we vote for political parties. Even in the US they vote for party delegates who then vote on who should be president.

Neither has a mandate to dictate.

We vote for parties but ultimately we vote for the head of those parties and what they want their party to do should they be voted in to do it.

There's no doubt, for instance, that the abysmal Labour Party results of the recent election rest squarely upon Corbyn's shoulders.

The asshat is setting the stage to become emperor. Declaring himself the “chief” law enforcement officer in the nation.

It would not surprise me even a little if there is never another election in this country. He has the military in his pocket. He has the senate in his pocket. He has the supreme court in his pocket. He has the justice department in his pocket. If he tries who will stop him?

True. The point is that all leaders lead/dictate. That's their job. They are dictators by default.

The problem here of course is that the definition of a dictator is ambiguous. A true dictator cannot be voted out of power, but never let this point fog your mind to the point that all political leaders are dictating their agendas within acceptable parameters, or else dictating their agendas as a means of challenging the status quo. And don't ever think for one moment that challenging the status quo is the mark of a dictator.

Who would ever want to live in a realm where the status quo was exempt from questioning?!!

Of course, none of this is intended as a support for either Trump or Hitler, but at the end of the day don't think that my opinion here hinges upon whether a leader or their party dictates, because dictating is what we 'hire' them to do, always.

Maybe because King George didn’t have a an arsenal of nukes. Have you heard how Turnip talks about California, or any blue state? I have no doubt that this maniac would unleash hell if it suited him. This isn’t anywhere near the same. The small arms ordinary citizens may own are woefully inadequate to deal with M1A Abrahams battle tanks, Tomahawk cruise missiles, Apache Long Bow attack helicopters and the myriad of weapons that constitutes the power of US military.

Before anyone starts in citing Vietnam consider the US quit, which is not the same as being defeated. Had the US resolve not wavered, and public opinion soured, the US could have strolled into what was left of Hanoi.

It wouldn’t matter how brave and valiant we battled, even if we took heavy weapons. I honestly fear all would be lost, and world would burn.

We might not have to wait for climate change to cause our extinction.

I agree that Trump is a fucktard and dangerous. However, the moment he starts using nukes and tanks on US citizens is the moment that Trump self-implodes. I once had a pet hamster that wouldn't have been so stupid.

At that point his fate wouldn’t matter, and be too late. Once the dogs of war are set loose it’s really hard to make them heel.

Except the leader in the democratic race is Bernie, and his support is growing. A huge swath of Americans yearn for UHC, and I’ve heard moderate republicans, yes they still exist, voice disgust with the orange shitgibbon. My concern is that there may not even be another election. I would put nothing out of the question with this never ending horror.

William McRaven: If good men like Joe Maguire can’t speak the truth, we should be deeply afraid
William H. McRaven, a retired Navy admiral, was commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command from 2011 to 2014. He oversaw the 2011 Navy SEAL raid in Pakistan that killed Osama bin Laden.

Edmund Burke, the Irish statesman and philosopher, once said: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Over the course of the past three years, I have watched good men and women, friends of mine, come and go in the Trump administration — all trying to do something — all trying to do their best. Jim Mattis, John Kelly, H.R. McMaster, Sue Gordon, Dan Coats and, now, Joe Maguire, who until this week was the acting director of national intelligence.

I have known Joe for more than 40 years. There is no better officer, no better man and no greater patriot. He served for 36 years as a Navy SEAL. In 2004, he was promoted to the rank of rear admiral and was chosen to command all of Naval Special Warfare, including the SEALs. Those were dark days for the SEALs. Our combat losses from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were the highest in our history, and Joe and his wife, Kathy, attended every SEAL funeral, providing comfort and solace to the families of the fallen.

But it didn’t stop there. Not a day went by that the Maguires didn’t reach out to some Gold Star family, some wounded SEAL, some struggling warrior. Every loss was personal, every family precious. When Joe retired in 2010, he tried the corporate world. But his passion for the Special Operations soldiers was so deep that he left a lucrative job and took the position as the president of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, a charity that pays for educating the children of fallen warriors.

In 2018, Joe was asked to be the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, a job he knew well from his last assignment as a vice admiral. He accepted, but within months of his arrival came the announcement of Coats’s departure as director of national intelligence. Maguire didn’t seek to fill the job; he was asked to do it by the president. At first he declined, suggesting that Sue Gordon, Coats’s deputy, would be better suited for the job.

But the president chose Maguire. And, like most of these good men and women, he came in with the intent to do his very best, to follow the rules, to follow the law and to follow what was morally right. Within a few weeks of taking the assignment, he found himself embroiled in the Ukraine whistleblower case. Joe told the White House that, if asked, he would testify, and he would tell the truth. He did. In short order, he earned the respect of the entire intelligence community. They knew a good man was at the helm. A man they could count on, a man who would back them, a man whose integrity was more important than his future employment.

But, of course, in this administration, good men and women don’t last long. Joe was dismissed for doing his job: overseeing the dissemination of intelligence to elected officials who needed that information to do their jobs.

As Americans, we should be frightened — deeply afraid for the future of the nation. When good men and women can’t speak the truth, when facts are inconvenient, when integrity and character no longer matter, when presidential ego and self-preservation are more important than national security — then there is nothing left to stop the triumph of evil.

Why aren't the news channels and Sanders saying the obvious: Canada has national healthcare. It did not lead to socialism. maybe Bernie wants to hang on to the socialist label? He won't change much of anything in 4 years, but now it just seems he will.

Lots of Americans believe Canada is socialist. Pointing out that we have UHC is evidence of it to them.

The fact extended medical benefits provided by private insurers plays a significant role in our healthcare system always seems to go over people's heads.
