Operation Dark Heart, memoir by Anthony Shaffer (by the U. S. Dept. of Defense)[edit]
On September 20, 2010 the Pentagon bought[259] and burned[260] 9,500 copies of Operation Dark Heart, nearly all the first run copies for supposedly containing classified information

Harry Potter books (in various American cities)[edit]
There have been several incidents of Harry Potter books being burned, including those directed by churches at Alamogordo, New Mexico and Charleston, South Carolina in 2006.[239] More recently books have been burnt in response to J.K. Rowling's comments on Donald Trump.[240] See Religious debates over the Harry Potter series.

Berkeley book burning[edit]
In 2001, UC Berkeley students burned copies of Daniel J. Flynn's book on Mumia Abu-Jamal after verbally shouting him down during his scheduled speech.[234]

Comic book burnings, 1948[edit]
In 1948, children – overseen by priests, teachers, and parents – publicly burned several hundred comic books in both Spencer, West Virginia, and Binghamton, New York. Once these stories were picked up by the national press wire services, similar events followed in many other cities.[197]

Trump is furious with the CDC for doing its job

Public-health officials on Tuesday announced that the US should prepare for a coronavirus outbreak and enraged President Donald Trump in the process.

"It's not so much of a question of if this will happen in this country anymore but a question of when this will happen," Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said during a press call. "We are asking the American public to prepare for the expectation that this might be bad."

Messonnier also said the agency was "preparing as if we are going to see community spread in the near term," adding that the outbreak could soon lead to a "disruption to everyday life."

The announcement infuriated Trump, The Washington Post reported Wednesday, because he believes the CDC's warnings spooked investors and contributed to the stock market's downturn over the past two days.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled by more than 1,000 points Monday and by nearly 900 points on Tuesday. According to CNBC, it was the first time the benchmark posted consecutive losses of at least 800 points.

The president, meanwhile, is significantly downplaying the possibility of a severe coronavirus outbreak in the US.

"China is working very, very hard," Trump told reporters at a business roundtable at the US Embassy in New Delhi. "I have spoken to President Xi, and they are working very hard. If you know anything about him, I think he will be in pretty good shape. They have had a rough patch, but now it looks like they are getting it more and more under control. I think that is a problem that is going to go away."

Early Wednesday, Trump suggested the news media and Democratic lawmakers were trying to stoke fears about the spread of the virus.

"Low Ratings Fake News MSDNC (Comcast) & @CNN are doing everything possible to make the Caronavirus look as bad as possible, including panicking markets, if possible," he tweeted, misspelling coronavirus and using a pun for MSNBC. "Likewise their incompetent Do Nothing Democrat comrades are all talk, no action. USA in great shape!"

The president also tagged the CDC's Twitter handle in a subsequent tweet and said he would hold a news conference about the coronavirus at the White House later Wednesday, adding that CDC officials would be present.

Trump's comments are at odds with reality and fly in the face of repeated warnings from public-health officials.

He's more concerned about his fucking political future than a potential national health emergency. He's not going to change.

This is where the gravity denier hits the ground. It's all well and good contriving endless fake realities when it's just about human interactions, politics and the like, but viruses don't give two fucks about your political ideology or subjective wants and aspirations. Trump's demands that his self-eulogizing narrative supplant facts could quite literally see people die as a result - it's hardly the first time in human history - Stalin's support of Lysenko springs to mind:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trofim_Ly ... Lysenkoism

Lysenko forced farmers to plant seeds very close together since, according to his "law of the life of species", plants from the same "class" never compete with one another.[15] Lysenko played an active role in the famines that killed millions of Soviet people and his practices prolonged and exacerbated the food shortages.[15] The Soviet Union's allies suffered under Lysenkoism, too. Communist China adopted his methods in the late 1950s and endured even bigger famines. Peasants were reduced to eating tree bark and bird droppings.[15] At least 30 million died of starvation.[15]

Outside the Soviet Union, scientists spoke critically: British biologist S. C. Harland lamented that Lysenko was "completely ignorant of the elementary principles of genetics and plant physiology" (Bertram Wolfe, 2017). Criticism from foreigners did not sit well with Lysenko, who loathed Western "bourgeois" scientists and denounced them as tools of imperialist oppressors. He especially detested the American-born practice of studying fruit flies, the workhorse of modern genetics. He called such geneticists "fly lovers and people haters".

The sentiment sounds vaguely familiar though I can’t put my finger on why.

This is exactly why oppositional politics and nationalism etc is so destructive to the human species.
When THEY are automatically not to be listened to and their suggestions rejected, even though they have more experience and have achieved better outcomes, it means you are about to repeat all the mistakes THEY made in the past, then make more mistakes by over-correcting, until finally coming to a position that you might have been in very quickly to the benefit of all.

Of course. "Deep state", to those who use the term, just means "the public service", and the ones they resent most are the ones whose expertise is so far in advance of that of politicians that politicians (of any integrity) are almost compelled to follow their advice, and this situation persists regardless of which party's been elected.

These fuckers resent being told what to do, or having their own lack of expertise thrown into relief, so they perceive the very existence of people who demonstrably know more than they do about how to run a nation as a personal affront.

Most sane Americans actually appreciate having the world's best epidemiologists working for the CDC, with that expertise available to both Democratic and Republican administrations. But to a raging narcissist like Trump, all he can see is that he's in competition with the CDC for who's seen as an authority at a time of pandemic, and everyone knows it's the CDC. So the two responses to that are to deny that we're dealing with a pandemic, or to find some angle to put himself above the CDC (I'm elected, they're not, so listening to them is undemocratic!).

Once you just view everything in terms of Trump's ego (as he does), it all makes sense.

Aye. We're past the hypothetical 'What if this pathologically incompetent narcissist is faced with an actual significant crisis', now we're living it. Will it be enough for some of his knuckle-dragging supporters to wake up, for any republicans to regrow a spine (likely out of self-preservation).

Well past, Alan. Well past indeed.

The cat is out of the bag, so to speak. With death from a case of a non traveler on American soil the notion that we should direct all official communications through the VP’s office is beyond absurd. I am livid that the CDC “must” clear the release of info with anyone, much less a whack job Bible thumping yes man with the intellectual prowess of a pupating bot larva. It’s up to this seditious prick how much, and what, we are allowed to know? He is supposed to understand detailed scientific reports when he denies the science from the beginning? Yes, we are well and truly fucked. If the CDC attempted to explain gene expression in the viral takeover of the host he would pray for understanding. Seriously. What the hell ever he imagined would become the “truth”.

George Orwell missed low, by a lot.

Then “Dear Leader” has the nerve to say the democrats are behind this, somehow. He is standing there, using a real national emergency as a political weapon, falsely claiming his opposition is doing what he himself is openly doing. I saw a news clip of the orange shitgibbon doing this at a “rally” last night (2/28/20). He is the worst example of the species to ever set foot near DC, and we may not survive this. Not “just” from this virus, which could get bad bad, but from the cumulative deconstruction of what we had at least a pretense of innocence about.

If we do come through this intact as a nation we now see a pile of things that needs changing to adapt to the modern world. If there is anything good that might come from all this is a nation aware that they are a part of a wider world, like it or not. Maybe we will start electing officials that act for all, and not the few. The few fuck us like truck stop whores.

This is Trump's standard operating procedure.

Crooked Hillary. Low energy Jeb. Lyin' Ted. And that's just from before he was elected. Calling Elijah Cummings racist. Claiming Democrats want to take away people's healthcare. It's transparently absurd. Every single insult this shitgibbon has uttered, and there are thousands, applies better to himself than to its target. It is, frankly, a window into what passes for his conscience. Whatever would keep normal people up at night, he's trying to pin on someone else at 3am on Twitter.
