The Democrats, for the most part, are meek and inept. Bust the fillibuster and get to governing. Zero Republicans out of 211 voted for the stimulus bill in the house. something that would help their own constituents immensely, small businesses, states trying to vaccinate and keep things running. They're not going to unify with Democrats for anything. Therefore, there's no use trying to get 60 votes.

Surely Moscow Mitch understands that his party is getting out of control. I'd say it started getting particularly nutty with the emergence of the tea party [bowel] movement. He must know by now he can't control the mango maniac or his cult followers. If only out of self-preservation and holding on to power [which is all he cares about], he should be doing whatever he can to excise this particular malignant cancer from his party and cast aside the lunatic fringe.

Or the person who was contracted to design the stage set out to indicate what he thought of the CPAC. It reminds me of Trump making a speech in front of a doctored presidential seal. They've not needed to kill the fillibuster yet this session, so I suspect it'll be terminated the moment McConnel next tries to use it. At the moment killing it can still be used as a "threat". I suspect they are still in handing the Republicans rope mode.

In any event I'd be surprised if the filibuster is still in place by the time the "For the People Act" makes it to the Senate.

McConnell is allegedly steering a bill in Kentucky's legislature to strip the Dem governor's ability to fill a vacancy in the US Senate, strongly implying he'll retire before his term is over (suggesting he may have gotten an overdue death sentence from his doctor, imo). Naturally, his handpicked would-be successor is the AG who went out of his way to prevent a modicum of justice in the aftermath of Breonna Taylor's murder.

I saw that, they are unable to play fair.

Like Boebert, another liar of Trumpian levels, at least on air. Here's her rapsheet. I should say rapsheets, there's 2 pages. It make my blood boil that they keep giving her chances, and she keeps blowing them. She also has a penchant for not reporting to court, over and over again. I'd be surprised if she doesn't crash and injure someone again. If I did 2 of these things I'd have lost my license, at least temporarily. If I didn't show up just once I'd be put in jail for at least a week. Her husband has his own record, but I don't know that it's online in pdf form.

I got pointed at this opinion piece in the US "conservative" National Review, about "why not fewer voters", from Professor Heather Cox Richardson's letters (can't link to the original because arsebook is being a face). As expected, she dissects it with reference to the Southern slave states, etc. but I found it weirdly refreshing.

Here's a guy openly rejecting democracy in favour of oligarchy without the usual hiding behind "the other people are all communists" bullshit. Whilst it's not explicit there's no other conclusion based on what he's written and his complete and utter failure to address the elephant in the room (no pun intended) in regard to limited enfranchisement of "Who decides?".

The question I have for our US friends is how mainstream is this opinion? Formerly it's the sort of thing which would have been consigned to the lunatic fringe (at least publicly) - but here it is in a mainstream publication.

From over here it's tricky to tell since I'm in something of a liberal echo-chamber (not least because most conservative sources leave me shouting at the telly/PC, throwing things and play havoc with my blood pressure).

Whilst I suspect it'll never be adopted as formal GOP policy, how much of the electorate would perceive this is as the actual party aims? (With all that would imply)

And how many would care?

(Asking for me, because the concept of an openly oligarchical authoritarian USA is terrifying, although some would contend that it is already, albeit with a veneer of democracy).

Indeed: I guess you have to wonder quite how important the distinction between it openly being so, and it being so with all the stagecraft that goes into pretending its not.

Seems like the former would be somewhat cheaper, if nothing else! Less performance budget needed.

85% of Republicans support Trump. Something like 77% supported the overturn of the election. The Republican party is actively trying to stop black people from voting, and still millions of Americans remain with the party.

How mainstream? Very mainstream. As mainstream as the Republican party, which is still almost half the electorate, and has all sorts of structural advantages in the EC and Senate.

And the fucking useless Dems won't even kill the filibuster so the legislative branch can, you know, legislate.

In short, we're fucked.
