B.B.C article
"A US soldier in Afghanistan has killed at least 16 civilians and wounded five after entering their homes in Kandahar province, senior local officials say.
He left his military base in the early hours of the morning and opened fire in at least two homes; women and children were among the dead."

Not sure why Rogue was in quotes - it seems a perfect description for this nutcase.

I hope he enjoys spending the rest of his life in the DB at [urlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Disciplinary_Barracks]Leavenworth[/url] - assuming, of course, that he doesn't actually manage to get executed (something everyone else on death row there has avoided thus far).

Thats how the B.B.C. had it. I think thats how some official described him, so as the locals did'nt think this was a new policy.

This will do wonders for U.S.-Afgan relations. An article I read said he was a sergeant in Army special forces, tasked with training the Afgan National Police. I wonder, what set him off? It's not like he was in a Mai Lai situation.

The ANP have a good record of going 'postal'. He may have been demonstrating how it should be done.
A friends step-son served in the stan. He said that whenever they went out with the local army/police they always kept an eye on them.

You know, just in case. :eh:

My mantra there, and in Iraq, was "Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everyone you meet."

More of a problem in A-stan than Iraq, but still something to always be aware of.

I still shudder at the memory of our intel guys in A-stan putting up a picture of a guy who'd been on our base for a local-vs-military soccer match - and who we later found out was involved in a suicide bomb attack.

I am surprised a soldier can walk off base at 0300 without orders. Seems like a cockup security wise as well, that he did the killing and then just surrendered to authorities.. Seems like this might be a complex story.
A brilliant propaganda coup for the Taliban, what seems like a legitimate war crime and an all round disaster.

Trained killer kills people. More on this breaking news at 11.
If a liberal party does something, then that act, by definition, is a liberal one. The only alternative is that they are not a liberal party.

Pretty much, yeah. I think if you're going to have an army, you accept things like this are always going to happen. It is an inevitability.

Fucking stop.

His training wasn't just killing - it was killing lawful enemy combatants. This multi-murder had nothing to do with his training.

Are you claiming that his ability to kill lots of people had nothing to do with him being given the tools and training to kill people?

Are you aware of how stupid that sounds?

Do you really think you can back up a claim that his training was a necessary element of his killing those unarmed civilians in the middle of the night?

Ugh. Kabul's reporting to it's own people that it was a "Group of Western Forces" that attacked the village. This ain't gonna go well.

Western forces kill 16 civilians in Afghanistan: Kabul government

By Ahmad Nadem
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan | Sun Mar 11, 2012 2:22pm EDT
(Reuters) - Western forces shot dead 16 civilians including nine children in southern Kandahar province on Sunday, Afghan officials said, in a rampage that witnesses said was carried out by American soldiers who were laughing and appeared drunk.

One Afghan father who said his children were killed in the shooting spree accused soldiers of later burning the bodies.

Witnesses told Reuters they saw a group of U.S. soldiers arrive at their village in Kandahar's Panjwayi district at around 2 am, enter homes and open fire.

The incident, one of the worst of its kind since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, is likely to deepen the divide between Washington and Kabul.
...

Haji Samad said 11 of his relatives were killed in one house, including his children. Pictures showed blood-splattered walls where the children were killed.

"They (Americans) poured chemicals over their dead bodies and burned them," a weeping Samad told Reuters at the scene.

"I saw that all 11 of my relatives were killed, including my children and grandchildren," said Samad, who had left the home a day earlier.

Neighbors said they awoke to crackling gunfire from American soldiers, whom they described as laughing and drunk.

"They were all drunk and shooting all over the place," said neighbor Agha Lala, who visited one of the homes where the incident took place. "Their bodies were riddled with bullets."

The Afghan Taliban would take revenge for the deaths, the group said in an e-mailed statement to media.
