Russians penetrated U.S. voter systems, top U.S. official says

The U.S. official in charge of protecting American elections from hacking says the Russians successfully penetrated the voter registration rolls of several U.S. states prior to the 2016 presidential election.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Jeanette Manfra, the head of cybersecurity at the Department of Homeland Security, said she couldn't talk about classified information publicly, but in 2016, "We saw a targeting of 21 states and an exceptionally small number of them were actually successfully penetrated."

Jeh Johnson, who was DHS secretary during the Russian intrusions, said, "2016 was a wake-up call and now it's incumbent upon states and the Feds to do something about it before our democracy is attacked again."

"We were able to determine that the scanning and probing of voter registration databases was coming from the Russian government."

NBC News reported in Sept. 2016 that more than 20 states had been targeted by the Russians.

There is no evidence that any of the registration rolls were altered in any fashion, according to U.S. officials.

I don't get it. I commented in another thread about this, but I'll repeat it. Voter rolls are public records. In most states they are easily available, in electronic format, for a small fee. In some other states they are restricted to residents and/or candidates in that state. In all states the political party committees have access to the rolls. What purpose does it serve to hack into them? Perhaps, if you could change individual party registrations, you might be able to influence primary elections in closed primary states by preventing people from voting, but how would you control that? It doesn't change a thing in the general election, people are going to vote for whoever they're going to vote for.

What if you take people off those rolls?

'Russians penetrate US voters."

I'm fairly sure I've seen that video on pornhub.

Ok, maybe, but they didn't manage to alter anything. Plus, there's paper backup in most states, there is here, in any case.

Given that only about 60% of registered voters bother to vote in a Presidential election, and somewhere south of 40% in midterms, they'd have to either be very lucky in who they deleted or they'd have to delete one fuck of a lot of people to make a difference. I can't see that going unnoticed.

All explained in the first 3 minutes - you don't have a democracy.

No, we don't, but then again practically nobody else does either.

We do live in a democracy. It's just an imperfect democracy. Putin is working hard to make it more imperfect.

I'm not sure why you assume they were trying to alter anything.

OK so we can decide to be picky and discuss how you're a republic but you know what I mean - grow the fuck up. Where's the paper ballots? Why were they not allowed to see the paper trail? Why was his polling off?

So for that election there's literally no record of the voting process and that's perfectly fine? Seems you don't neeed the Russians as your own kinsmen are fucking over your democratic right to vote in free and FAIR elections.
