Rick Santorum would encourage one of his daughters to see a pregnancy created through rape as "a gift of human life" and urge her to not consider an abortion, the socially ultra-conservative Republican presidential candidate has explained.

In an interview with CNN's Piers Morgan show, the former Pennsylvania senator was asked at length about his hardline views on abortion, which he would seek to ban via a constitutional amendment ...

... Asked whether this would rule out abortion even if the daughter felt having the child would ruin her life, he explained: "You can make the argument that if she doesn't have this baby, if she kills her child, that that too could ruin her life.

"This is not an easy choice, I understand that. As horrible as the way that daughter or son was created, it still is her child, and whether she has that child or doesn't it will always be her child, and she will always know that."

He added: "I believe and I think that the right approach is to accept this horribly created, in the sense of rape, but nevertheless, in a very broken way, a gift of human life, and accept what God is giving to you ..." (cont.)

What's the problem? It's what the Republican voters want. If you're going to blame Santorum, equal blame must also be placed on the electorate.

I'm not sure what word is appropriate for an unwanted event/result one can't refuse, but I'm sure 'gift' isn't it.

In any case, the idea that a omnipotent being can't bless people with life without wrecking their lives, seems somewhat despicable.

Notice that he seems to weasel out of the most important question: If after all his "encouragement" and "counselling", his daughter still wants an abortion, should be legally permitted to make that choice? And, given that at the moment abortion is legal, what would he do if she insists on making that choice?

If the likes of Santorum get into power, the right of pregnant women to go to Canada for abortions will be the next target. Then there will be restrictions on any pregnant woman going out of the US, just in case they are seeking an abortion. And there will be laws to make it illegal for US women to have abortions outside of the US. Then abortion will be considered murder, and Texas will execute women who have abortions.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking about by the end of it. We should at least be glad that he has to publicly dance around it, framing his view as a strong suggestion. I suspect "she'll have that baby and like it" would have been a viable response not too long ago.
