Teaching Humanism to be mandatory in all Welsh schools

#1  Postby Keep It Real » Jan 28, 2019 5:39 pm

Andrew Copson Chief exec Humanism UK wrote:Today we learned that after years of hard, consistent work with the Welsh Government to improve the national law on Religious Education, we have achieved our goal, and from 2022, the law in Wales will require humanism to be taught about in all schools.

This is an enormous achievement for Humanists UK and the hard work of Wales Humanists coordinator Kathy Riddick in particular. It follows on from our recent legal victory over Vale of Glamorgan, which resulted in the Welsh Government telling all councils to end discrimination against humanists.

What does it encompass? Human Rights should be taught, and re-taught, in my opinion just like first aid for example.

https://iheu.org/about/humanism/the-amsterdam-declaration/

1. Humanism is ethical. It affirms the worth, dignity and autonomy of the individual and the right of every human being to the greatest possible freedom compatible with the rights of others. Humanists have a duty of care to all of humanity including future generations. Humanists believe that morality is an intrinsic part of human nature based on understanding and a concern for others, needing no external sanction.

and:

3. Humanism supports democracy and human rights. Humanism aims at the fullest possible development of every human being. It holds that democracy and human development are matters of right. The principles of democracy and human rights can be applied to many human relationships and are not restricted to methods of government.

Well, yes I can google if I need, however, if someone told me: We gonna teach humanism, I would like to see the textbook.

I mean:

5. Humanism is a response to the widespread demand for an alternative to dogmatic religion.

Nah, that is not necessary in my opinion.

Gotta be good news though, no? If "Welsh" were substituted for "USA" I'd buy a bottle of Bollinger...as it is, I'm off to buy a mini bottle of Cava.

It's hard for me to recognize as I am unfamiliar with the situation in Welsh school and Wales. Probably is. Over here people don't really care about religion, one way or the other so there is no need for an alternative. I still am curious why Humanism in particular, instead of Philosophy in general with added Human Rights and first aid. What is the advantage?

Freud said circa "You can't get rid of religion unless you can replace it with something."

This is, in name at least, an alternative to religion.

ETA: And will presumably be taught in RE...which should then be renamed...:dunno:

Of course Religious Education is something of the ultimate oxymoron.

why not call it/teach ethics?
that’s what I had in school in lieu of Religious „Education“

too late (or the wrong time) in life for many of the students though.

"Would not a Rose by any other name smell as sweet?"

This hints at the importance of monolithic titles methinks. One word.

I guess if the government is going to mandate the teaching of an ideology, then Humanism is superior to any extant religion.

Completely appropriate.

Better would be to mandate a curriculum based on humanistic principles and leave the ideology to the parents.
