The Election No One Cares About.

#1  Postby Animavore » Jan 22, 2020 10:54 pm

General elections coming up and housing crisis is is top of the bill.

Will Fine Gael hold power? Will Fianna Fail come back again? Or will Ireland vote for someone else for a change?

Debate from last night featuring Fianna Fail and Fine Gael.

https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politic ... h-fianna-fáil-1.4148437?mode=amp

I don't remember Ireland having a two party system. Where's The Green Party, Labour, Sinn Fein, People Before Profit, The Social Democrats, The Socialist Party or any Independents?

Looks like the media are promoting more of the same.

Sinn Fein are trending best on social media. They have a rather progressive platform... but it's still Sinn fucking Fein.

Which party do you favour Ani?

I do, however, know who I'm not voting for. Our unelected Taoiseach.

Ahaaaa. But surely she lies. Look at how cool!
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

Are Ireland main political parties sane and unlikely to seriously break anything regardless of who gets elected?.

If that is so then its a bit boring and not surprising no one cares?

Real countries have nut jobs standing for power who have a real chance of getting elected

Well we do have Michael Healy Rae, but he's not a big player.

Latest polls show Sinn Fein in with a really good chance now.

Been listening to all the parties on the radio this morning. I likePeople Before Profit.
It sounds like Ireland might be about to break away from the cycle of FG/FF. FG have said they refuse to work with SF if they win.

Obviously I’m a complete outsider, I’ve never even been to any part of Ireland.

When I’ve read about Northern Irish politics in the paper (actually these days the modern online version of a paper), I’ve often been struck with the pronouncements of Sinn Fein politicians, they’ve struck me as among the most sensible and reasonable. Presumably it’s the same party in the Republic?

Obviously I’m aware of their historic links to the IRA.

It's the exact same party in the South and they are running a left, progressive platform. Ireland looks to be taking a turn left, possibly in reaction to Britain and the US going hard right and the associated shit-show.

Can you render a Cliff's Notes version of the housing crisis that you mentioned on your opening post?

House prices and rent is going through the roof. Many young people feel like they can never own a home. Forclosures leaving families homeless. USA vulture capitalists buying houses on the cheap and charging extortionate rent. Etc.

Just that is enough to wish them well, even though 25% is not enough for them to govern alone.

No, but since Fine Gael have said they refuse to work with Sinn Fein citing their past (a bit rich coming from a party with roots in the fascist Blue Shirts) it looks like a coalition will be formed with Fianna Fail, Labour, Greens, and other left/progressive groups.

How do Sinn Fein supporters who are disgusted with the history of the IRA explain the apparent contradiction, and why aren't their ideals better represented by another party?
