Endangered right whale experiencing mini-baby boom off New England

Social Sharing
7 baby right whales have been spotted so far this year after no calves survived last year

In this April 11, 2019, photo provided by the Center for Coastal Studies, a baby right whale swims with its mother in Cape Cod Bay off Massachusetts. Researchers say they have located three right whale calves in the bay recently after finding none in 2018. The whales are among the rarest in the world. The critically endangered North Atlantic right whale is experiencing a mini-baby boom in New England waters, researchers on Cape Cod have said.

The right whale is one of the rarest species of whale on the planet, numbering only about 411.

But the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown, Mass., said Friday its aerial survey team spotted two mom-and-calf pairs in Cape Cod Bay a day earlier. That brings the number seen in New England waters alone this year to three.

Quite the comeback winning the 2019 Masters.

Crowd loved it and they ducked the weather monster looming by starting early.

I recall his first Master where he set records that remain unbroken.

Jilted by mermaid lover.

Let this be a warning: Interspecie acquatic relationships sound ideal, but never work out and always leave you doggy-paddling 150 miles from shore.

:wake on a plane with gigantic hangover, realise I've been stitched up by my m8s 'cos they know I'm dead set against air travel and have put me on a flight, throw a tantrum and jump from plane via the cargo hold and landing gear in the style of Arnie in Commando, splash down in Indian Ocean, fall madly in love with Manatee who brought me, unconscious, back to the surface and saved my life, live happily ever after eating Crabbie Patties with Sponge Bob and Patrick in an underwater wonderland:

Sounds alright to me, what could possibly go wrong :dunno:

Waterworld is not even the best film set in water - never mind of all time
But its not an obviously stereotypical choice so is interesting in that sense

Small world file

Canadian who had heart attack while jogging in Florida saved by stranger — from his hometown

Tom Reddon got CPR from another Fredericton man who happened to be passing by

patient is recovering

'I'll be signing up for CPR soon'

Reddon says the last thing he remembers is the warm-up walk. "Next thing I remember is waking up two days later in the hospital.

"For my type of [cardiac] arrest, the success rate is not very high, so to have somebody there to immediately call 911, to do CPR and to have a hospital close by … and to have cardiac surgeons on hand to fix me up, I mean, it's amazing that everything fell together so well for me," said Reddon.

"I'm very lucky."

Arseneau, who is back home in Fredericton, said his biggest takeaway is the importance of knowing CPR.

"I'll be signing up for CPR soon," he said.

I think we'll get together when we get back in Fredericton over a craft beer or two and talk about life and stuff.
