On a cold November night in Times Square, Officer Lawrence DePrimo was working a counterterrorism post when he encountered an older, barefooted homeless man. The officer disappeared for a moment, then returned with a new pair of boots, and knelt to help the man put them on. The act of kindness would have gone unnoticed and mostly forgotten, had it not been for a tourist from Arizona.

Her snapshot — taken with her cellphone on Nov. 14 and posted to the New York Police Department’s official Facebook page late Tuesday — has made Officer DePrimo an overnight Internet hero.

How many of us remember this? As I remember the whole world celebrated this event, as a kind of feel-good contrast to the pain of 9/11.

I do remember that, that pilot did some amazing flying and saved a lot of lives. I enjoy watching plane crash shows to see how they worked out what went wrong and even more when they show how amazing pilots and crew hold a plane together and save lives with skill and determination.

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — On a bright autumn day, Renato Grbic was out fishing on the Danube with his brother when he heard a big splash. At first, he thought somebody had thrown something off the bridge.

Then he saw a man flailing in the water.

"We hurried and pulled the man out," Grbic recalls. "I remember telling him: Such a glorious day and you want to kill yourself!"

It was the first time Grbic saved a life. From that day 15 years ago, his own life would never be the same. The bright-eyed, tattooed restaurant owner from a shabby industrial zone on the outskirts of Belgrade has rescued 25 people who tried to kill themselves by jumping off the tall bridge over the Danube.

Always on alert in his little wooden motor boat, the burly 51-year-old has pulled people out of the river's muddy waters without asking for anything in return.

"I couldn't turn my back on them," Grbic said. "They are desperate people."

Grbic has been dubbed the "Superman of the Danube" by his admirers and awarded a hero's plaque by Belgrade city authorities. But even "Superman" can't save everybody who jumps off the 18-meter- (60-foot-) high bridge: At least as many as he had saved have killed themselves at the spot since Grbic's first rescue.

"When I hear that someone has jumped and I wasn't there I really feel bad," he said. "My eyes are always on the bridge."

An 18-year-old woman going through a mental crisis had burst out of her parents' car at the bridge, taken off her jacket and jumped, shouting: "Goodbye mom!"

Grbic said something had made him stick around: "It was a very windy day, a few minutes later and I would have gone."

The girl, Grbic said, is the only one who has stayed in touch.

Every January she comes to his fish restaurant to celebrate her "second birthday." She is married now and has a child. Grbic was invited to the wedding reception.

"My heart leaps every time I see her," he said.

If I remember the media coverage of this incident correctly, the praise for the professional & piloting skills of the Captain and crew of the aircraft was mostly drowned out by the babble of idiots who claimed god saved them, god was working through the pilot, etc, etc. :popcorn:

Put a smile on my face this morning :)

There is a video on the site, after a short advert.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/ ... th-science

A new model of empathy: the rat

At the very least, the new experiment reported in Science is going to make people think differently about what it means to be a “rat.” Eventually, though, it may tell us interesting things about what it means to be a human being.

In a simple experiment, researchers at the University of Chicago sought to find out whether a rat would release a fellow rat from an unpleasantly restrictive cage if it could. The answer was yes.

The free rat, occasionally hearing distress calls from its compatriot, learned to open the cage and did so with greater efficiency over time. It would release the other animal even if there wasn’t the payoff of a reunion with it. Astonishingly, if given access to a small hoard of chocolate chips, the free rat would usually save at least one treat for the captive — which is a lot to expect of a rat.

The researchers came to the unavoidable conclusion that what they were seeing was empathy — and apparently selfless behavior driven by that mental state.

I don't remember that at all, DB. Maybe you are primed to spot that kind of thing? What I remember is that the pilot was very unassuming, which endeared him to people all the more. I didn't get the impression that people were giving anyone but the pilot credit.

I heard a few people thank god for saving them, I think even the pilot mentioned that he felt god had helped him. I might be confusing it with another crash though since I watch so many of the crash shows and not one yet has gone past with survivors that hasn't had someone thank god...then thank the crew.

This might come as a surprise in this thread but in it's way it given the circumstance today it is a very good feel good post as it shows what a government with some guts can accomplish....

Firearms Regulation in Australia

In Australia, access to firearms is limited to persons with a genuine need. This includes government and police, sporting shooters with valid membership of an approved club, recreational shooters or hunters that produce proof of permission from a landowner, primary producers, pest controllers and bona fide collectors. All governments have agreed that self-protection is not a genuine need.

The key elements of Australia’s regulatory controls on firearms are:

* prohibitions on fully and semi automatic long arms, with their use restricted primarily to military, police or government purposes;
* prohibitions on sporting shooters possessing, owning, using, purchasing or importing high powered, concealable handguns;
* mandatory registration of all firearms on State and Territory firearms registry systems;
* mandatory licensing of all firearm owners; and
* strict licensing requirements, including age limitations, undertaking firearms safety training, and compliance with firearm storage standards.

start there......

This was a direct result of a shooting in Tasmania with an semi-automatic firearm

did it work....fucking right it did....

Guns killed more than 5000 people in Australia in the past decade. Nine out of 10 of the victims were male and most of them killed themselves.
Image
The number of deaths caused by firearms dropped almost 50 per cent between 1991 and 2001, with the biggest yearly fall in deaths coming after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre.

It's not like Aussies are milk toasts - the are rowdie they drink it's a hard driving sports and fishing culture....
and when common sense controls were put in place and enforced the death from firearms was cut in half. I'd feel much better if the same sensible laws were in Canada.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/breaking-news/italy-priest-tells-hes-to-be-a-father/story-fn3dxix6-1226537278987

A Sicilian priest has stunned his congregation by announcing during a mass he's set to become a father and is quitting to marry his partner.

"It's my last mass. I am in love with a woman and in a few months I will be a father," Vito Lombardo, 33, told his flock in the city of Trapani in northwestern Sicily, local newspapers said on Friday.

The relationship had been going on for a while but the priest waited until his partner was five months pregnant before announcing his departure, the reports said.

According to the Giornale di Sicilia daily, Lombardo tipped off the Vatican about his decision to marry before announcing it to his parishioners.

Children self-teach with tablet computers in one of the poorest places on Earth...

Tablets as teachers: Poor kids learn ABCs
2012-12-19

Wenchi - The kids in this village wear filthy, ragged clothes. They sleep beside cows and sheep in huts made of sticks and mud. They have no school. Yet they all can chant the English alphabet, and some can make words.

The key to their success: 20 tablet computers dropped off in their Ethiopian village in February by a US group called One Laptop Per Child.

The goal is to find out whether kids using today's new technology can teach themselves to read in places where no schools or teachers exist. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers analysing the project data say they're already startled.

"What I think has already happened is that the kids have already learned more than they would have in one year of kindergarten," said Matt Keller, who runs the Ethiopia programme.
