Board of education chairman says subject is debatable, controversial and too complicated for students


They may have said that, but what it really means is:

Subject is debatable when you include religious distortions, controversial when you bring religion into it, and too complicated for adults who have been improperly taught, so we assume students will have issues with it, or at least their parents will, and we don't want to deal with that.
