I could be wrong and could just be a piece of arse regulation. Wouldn't be the first case of either.

I checked to see whether Dutch soldiers are prohibited from growing beards and could not find any indication that they were. Did see plenty of pictures of Dutch soldiers with beards however.

Take it you didn't make it to my next post below where I addressed my limited knowledge on the subject.mrjonno wrote:monkeyboy wrote:I always understood the beard thing was about getting a good seal on a respirator (gas mask) if needed. Wonder how it works in the Indian army which is a reasonable modern/professional one?. Makes me wonder if its more to do with tradition than practical problems?
I'm only guessing as a non-military person that if a gas mask doesn't work if you are hairy(or covered in dirt) which you are likely to be on the front as opposed to on parade than a soldier is in the shit in a gas attack

I sorta kinda get why the other things were banned, eventhough I disagree, but beards? Seriously?

Grab risk during hand-to-hand, prevents proper wear of a protective mask - and, perhaps most importantly, the regulations were written in the 50s and 60s when only dirty hippies wore beards.

It's ironic as fuck that only Special Operations types get to have modified grooming standards and wear beards - because for them, supposedly, it's a key part of their integration with local forces that they wear beards to fit in. But the rest of us who are integrating with local forces cannot. Because regulations.
Stupid.
