Awesome vid, JPM. It'll might prove useful in my discussions with Lion on the emergence of differing Bible traditions, and the whole issue of redaction and canonization of texts. But, alas, some people have their fingers stuck in their ears so far, they can hardly listen to countervailing critique.Image

While I don't necessarily agree with Harris' "science of morals" in his latest book and talks, I do like this talk on misunderstandings of atheism.

More by the ever-cheeky Pat Condell, this an argument on why he doesn't respect religious belief and has no compunction about attacking it:

and this is worth a chuckle:

Nothing is so fatal to the progress of the human mind as to suppose that our views of science are ultimate; that there are no mysteries in nature; that our triumphs are complete, and that there are no new worlds to conquer. -Humphry Davy

Feynman was once criticised (after his death I think) by the notorious scientific 'anarchist' Paul Feyarbend for not being sophisticated enough philosophically in his work. The best response to that I think is that Feynman's work makes predictions accurate to fourteen decimal places, so Feyerabend and his philosophy can go get fucked.

I've watched one of the segments of this, which looks interesting. Given Winston's combined scientific training and Judaic religious beliefs, not exactly an atheist vid.

For the subsequent segments, go here for part 2, then drop down the description window and click on the links provided for more segments.

This from the YT description:
The Story of God (2005)

Episode 1:
"Life, the Universe and Everything . . ." (Parts 1-6)

Episode 2:
"No God but God" (Parts 7-12)

Episode 3:
"The God of the Gaps" (Parts 13-18)

[links to other segments]

Professor Robert Winston presents a definitive three-part documentary series from the BBC on the history of mankind's quest to understand the nature of God.

First aired in 2005, "The Story of God" is an epic journey across continents, cultures and eras exploring religious beliefs from their earliest incarnations through to the development of today's major world faiths.

Among many highlights, the series examines the roots of religious beliefs in prehistoric societies and the different ways in which humanity's sense of the divine developed. It takes a look at the divergence between religions that worship a range of deities and those that represent strict monotheism. Judaism, Christianity and Islam are explored in order to understand the ideas they share about God and the issues that divide them. The question as to why mankind started to believe in God at all is investigated, as is another question: If God really did create humanity, why does God allow humanity to suffer? Finally, the series examines how belief in God has been challenged by modern, secular ideas, even presenting a mathematical formula that can be used to calculate the probability of God's existence.

Surely the chimps must have gotten their moral behavior by reading some religious book.
