This video describes how, in ancient Hebrew, the books of the Bible originally had various names such as El Elyon, El Shaddai, and Yahweh in places where modern English translations usually just say "God" or "the Lord". Is there a modern English version that uses the original names that were in those places, or at least translates them directly (god of mountains, god of armies, highest god)?
ChasM wrote:^ I don't know of any such translation, but it would be nice (though terribly confusing to believers). I generally use the Catholic New Jerusalem version, which is a fairly recent literal scholarly translation, referring to God as "Yahweh God" in the Yahwist sections. There's also the Hebrew Interlinear Bible.
I think I've found what I was looking for, referred to in a different thread here.

I saw the references to this series above but I think this is a critical addition so it fully deserves to be mentioned separately. A well thought approach of very important problems: the problem of infinite regress in epistemology and why empiricism.

I do not happen to agree with the foundherentism (foundationalism + coherentism at the same time) of many optimists* but here the author retain an important dose of fallibilism so it's OK. Of course postulating God to justify objective knowledge is far from being the most rational solution at this moment in time.

*a form of skepticism based on a variation of Popper's critical philosophy is a much better approach in my view (but accepting that we can talk at least of weak justification for our knowledge, via the senses, whilst always retaining non-trivial fallibilism; that is remaining fully open to the possibility that we can be massively deluded by the senses).

I think ex muslims (not too many videos specifically about islam in this thread by the way) understand far better the fervent believers than many ex-Christians (at least in my view the degree of indoctrination is much higher in the muslim communities so they know very well how these people think*). Very good points. Especially when talking of muslims.

The anti-theist variant of Pascal Wager at the end should convince all muslims who want to be rational that reason is important (for there is a problem with reason in islam, at least the sunni version, where allah is still seen as Will and Power but not Reason: http://www.amazon.com/Closing-Muslim-Mind-Intellectual-Islamist/dp/1933859911)**...

*by the way I was accused many times by muslims of working for the jews, free masons, of being a 'lunatic' and so on :) in the vast majority of cases they went directly to ad-hominems even without understanding the arguments (islam is outside rational criticism for them, many cannot even imagine that islam can be criticized rationally)

**accepting that human reason is important and can investigate critically even the basis of religion is absolutely necessary for any further progressive reforms; it's not enough of course (as we still see in some parts of Christianity as well, in spite of the re-hellenization of the Christian mind since Thomas Aquinas), what is needed is also capacity to think way beyond the islam of the last 1400 years...

Indeed if an intelligent Creator of our Universe really exist there are good reasons to think that It is far from what the Abrahamic religions teach...
