I suspect that, during NDEs, the pineal gland (which is a kind of methylation machine, basically, turning seratonin into melatonin), receives various chemicals that it doesn't normally receive, and as a result, starts to generate the kind of methylated chemicals that can give you hallucinations!

It's funny how various oddities of our senses can be interpreted as real things.

Yes, but as the brain shuts down the chemistry is likely to go haywire and the concentrations of neurotransmitters will go off balance.
It would be weird if there were no hallucinations.
