Except Christopher wasn't "defiant" and did not want to go to hell. He wanted evidence. So if god loved him he would have given Christopher evidence.

Not in the least. It's typical religious horseshit. All they ever had were blind assertions and when someone dies, they make the blind assertion that he now knows he was wrong. Yet another completely untestable assertion to toss on the crap heap and, of course, shows what a petty, vindictive, little hate-fest these people are living. In fairness though, many religious believers would be appalled by this. I can tell you without the bother of asking what my mother's response would be. "How can people who believe in God say such things and be so hateful?" And yet, those same religious people that would be appalled by by someone coming right out and saying such a thing still believe it is true and never question the entire premise.

There are a large proportion of Christians these days who don't believe hell exists. Perhaps more of them outside the US than in it. That, in a phrase that Mr Hitchens often used to great effect, and with just a hint of irony, "is progress, of a kind".
