A: Do you believe in fairies?
B: No
A: Do you believe there are no fairies?
B: No, I just lack belief that there are

The Viz Character Mr. Logic springs to mind when thinking of person B in this dialogue. What was the tagline to that cartoon...oh yeah, that's it:

Actually, person A is also reminiscent of Mr Logic IMO in that practically nobody would make that follow-up question and instead just naturally assume their interlocutor believed there to be no fairies what with, you know, their both being human and whatnot.

There's so much margarine on that fence I doubt anybody, if they're truly honest with themselves, is sitting on it. :snooty:

KIR, that's the same position just using different words. I lack belief in fairies. I don't believe in fairies. If someone asked me if I believe in fairies, I would say no.

Argument via cartoon strip. Brilliant.

You think all kinds of crap. How is your doubt a valid point that I should even concern myself with?

Mostly someone proposes a belief and we decide whether to believe it.

What are you referring to here? Who is 'someone'? who is 'we'? Are you referring to just this forum?

It's more accurate for most people to say, no, I actively do not believe in the dumbass thing you are proposing.

Really? Because from here, it just looks like you're playing with words. What do you mean 'actively do not believe'? How is that substantially different from 'I have no belief'? Belief in not-god is active belief.

How about Leprechauns that bury pots of gold at the bases of rainbows - do you believe there are none of them?

No. Why would I bother? How do you reconcile your belief in not-god, not-margarine and not-fairies with your statement that you dislike every belief you have so far come across?

Before you fill the thread with repeats of the same question, I'll head you off here and just let you know - you already know my answer after you found out I don't believe in gods. Save yourself and everyone else the effort of wading through this shit. It's not my fault you're finding it difficult to grasp that I'm just not arsed with having beliefs about things.

But you refuse to answer the question with a yes or no. Ever thought of taking up politics?

Belief is an unbelievably broad term I believe...belief is somewhat synonymous with woo so some folks refuse to be aligned with it full stop I think.

To whom? You? No, it's OK. I prefer being accurate. I'm not responsible for how other people think.

Edited to ask you the question again - how do you reconcile your raft of beliefs with your claim to dislike every belief you have so far come across?

Try this then.

Q1. Do you think there are Leprechauns on planet earth?
Q2. Do you think there are no Leprechauns on planet earth?
