Someone asked, "why are you against God?"

What would you say to a question like that?

Atheism, secularism & freethought etc.

Sometimes I get stumped by questions I'm not expecting. This question, "why are you against God?" almost threw me for a loop. I thought, 'oh, great, I'm going to get squashed." Then a really nice answer came to me...well, an answer I liked anyway.

"I'm not against God (how can you be against something that doesn't exist), I'm just against blind faith."

Yeah! I'm reeeeeally against 'blind faith!"

What are some questions people asked of you that you (impromptu) found a really nice answer to?

Jehovah's Witness at my door: Do you understand God's plan for you?

Me: Golly, when you talk about this God, I don't know what you mean.

JW: Well, God's plan for you is explained in our magazine, The Watchtower, on page seven.

Me: I still don't know what you mean by God.

JW: It's all explained in this magazine... [shuffles off to neighbor's door]

And Grace, why do you hate God so much?

My answer "I'm not against gods any more than I am against mermaids. I just don't believe in them."

I'm not against "God" I just think that people that believe in "God" are either a tiny bit deluded or greatly deluded, depending on how far they want to go with this "God" stuff.

How about, "You're not really an atheist, you're just angry at God." Nope, I'm not angry at God, but I do have a bit of animosity towards certain people that keep pushing such an absurd idea.

As an atheist since 1977 I can say that I am not against something that I do not believe in, rather I am against the idea that God is something to believe in.

If someone asked me why I am against God I would respond, "I'm not. Just opposed to the belief in God on purely rational/logical/intellectual grounds."

Yes, strong atheist here.

My answer: "Yes, that's right. Now, may I have your name, please?

"God" is an idea. I am against that idea. It's a bad idea.

After the standard reply of not hating that which doesn't exist, you could try asking them (serious face), "Who would win in a fight between (any two fictional characters/superheroes/etc which come to mind that moment)?"

"It's kinda hard to be against something that doesn't exist. However, I'm certainly against the people that thought God up. I mean, of all the horrible villains in all of fiction, it took a real sick mind to think up the Abrahamic god, and an even sicker mind to find such a character worthy of reverence. Now get off my porch, sicko." :P

BlackBart, "If he doesn't exist, how can he fuck slugs?" If something can't fuck slugs because it doesn't exist, how come the third-person singular masculine nominative case pronoun was used twice in the same sentence.

Questions like "Why do you hate God?" all seem to get the same response from me, which is me pointing out that they are loaded questions that assume the existence of their god.

I also received an interesting statement years ago while discussing evolution with a YEC. She basically told me that evolution wasn't true because scientists haven't proven the Big Bang. I then told her that what she said was silly, told her the validity of the theory of evolution does not depend on the theory explaining the beginning of the universe, and then took her reasoning to an absurd point: Sorry children. I can't teach you why 1 + 1 = 2 today because scientists haven't proven the Big Bang.
"I would rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are,
Because a could-be is a maybe that is reaching for a star.
I would rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far,
For a might-have-been has never been, but a has was once an are".

I am against God in the same way as I am against Sauron - they're both vengeful autocrats with a thirst for inhumane punishment. Fortunately, they are both fictional characters.
Science is the worst form of inquiry into reality, except all the others that have been tried.
Religion = Mass Stockholm Syndrome.
