Well, actually I think the main reason why people believe in the "unbelievable" is the indoctrination of people at ages where they believe just everything which is said to them. Thats a point made by Dawkins in his books and its probably the most persuasive explanation. A child believes just everything it is told by his parents or other authorities. It MUST believe everything, because it would be no good idea to try if the alligator will be nice to him or not. If you tell the child again and again that Jesus is out there and the Bible is the word of god, than it will believe it as sincerely as the fact that the earth is not flat. And it will be very hard for this child to get rid of these absurd believes in later life...
