I'd never want to say something is impossible, but the potential connections in the brain are greater than all the particles in the cosmos. Added to which, these connections arise out of experiences & the creation of new 'action potentials'. They don't just arise through chance. So very, very, very, very, very unlikely. I think that was enough verys.

I have heard that quote enough, could you provide the source, how can there be more connections that all particles in the cosmos when the brain itself is made of particles, and we still have almost the whole universe left for us. :ask:
very's are still not enough, show me that it is impossible. :naughty2: Or better provide the exact probable chances, but I dont know whether we have understood the whole science behind a particular memory

USA

Correct! 9% in the USA claim to have experienced a past life, compared to 7% of the sample in India. :) Chadha, Sahni & Alvarado (1987) compared with Palmer 1979, cited in Alvarado 1996. However the verified details are very different - 33% of Indian students had verified details of their accounts, compared with 5% of Americans. Indian students are also about half as likely to experience Out of the Body Experiences.

In response to your discussions on another thread I think Sanskrit is a pretty good language for discussion of this sort of thing; sadly I am crap at it. I only really learned a few words and phrases. Gujarati I am pretty bad at too.I'll have to try and learn some other languages of India one day.

I never said there were. Read what I wrote! More potential connections isn't the same as more connections.

oh, yes, I saw later, my bad. But still, potential connections?..., It is like saying there are more ways of arranging sand continuously than the number of sand particles in the universe.(source please).

Oh thanks a lot, that makes me feel great, but I am inclined for any language, spanish, russian, arabic, any language Indian or not etc.
I am planning to translate for myself things I read in physics to other languages, good to learn something new while also relearning some thing.
Also, sanskrit as a language is in a limbo, academics know it but thats it.
Efforts on Sanskrit Language in early India were responsible for some very profound results, Indian atomism probably came about due to word-sentence relation, beginnings of algebra- Indians liked to write things down and remember them, also perhaps logic.
Also, the grammatical structure in it has been helpful for linguists in europe in 19th century.

Yes Sanskrit would have been an obvious choice for India to adopt, because like Latin, it is a dead language, and not associated with any one ethnic or regional group. Instead you got English. :( Sanskrit is used a lot over here in discussions of consciousness, and that sort of thing, because it allows for a technical precision English totally lacks, or so I am told by people who know more than me :)

That is due to the buddhists, they were brilliant. If I had to say, who have been the most brilliant of India's Intellectuals through the ages, then the first position I would give to the Jains, they were brilliant, if you have heard the story of 6 blind men and the elephant.
It wasnt an accidental example, they have a whole philosophical view(darshana) Anekantavada, Syadvada,Nayavada.
They also worked on atomism among other things(maths). Their core philosophy is non-violence.They also were somewhat syncretic. Neither absolute denial of universality(buddhist view) nor absolute belief(hindus).
The second goes to Buddhists, they were brilliant logicians.Priced possessions of India's intellectual age
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nalanda
Then there were hindu grammarians, also there were others, Agnostics, yoga, sankhya(dualists) and finally atheists(similar to modern ones). As you can see, inspite of having lesser presence, the quality of their intellectual contribution was comparatively much higher.
Sanskrit would never have become a language in India,It is too old, the only reason Hindi did not become India's main language is because a section of hindi fanatics engaged in triumphalism and tried to push down it on others, others didnt like it because they thought they would lose jobs, also they have their own language. So english stayed on, because it was a decoy,it was neutral(the English left). But english stayed behind,my problem is not with english but the kind of drastic effects which are falling on other languages as we speak. More languages are dying today than ever before.
But technology shall save the day, perhaps another 50 yrs.

:naughty: Well, I wonder, why are people bringing such stuff up at this site ? Do they just want to make fun of "woopidity" or "stupid blondes" ? You're doing this at primary school, don't ya ? That's not enough to cope with the complexity of the philosophical and theological - or even esoterical (this one for the "stupid blonde") concepts the people on that show are talking about. This is especially true for the Indian cultural representatives talking about Reincarnation and Karma theory. To the people here thinking they're intellectually superior to the talkshow guests: read Carvarka's primer in Indian History of Philosophy and Science (yes !) above carefully. Have a look at Indian syllogism and mathematics. It's the SAME intellect which is thinking also about concepts like GOD, CREATION, EVOLUTION, SOUL, AFTERLIFE, REINCARNATION, JUDGEMENT, ETHICS, ACTION and - LOVE. Cause that's legitimate and very human to reason about even the "big" concepts - despite of having no clear answers. I guess, you know absolutely nothing about any of the mentioned terms - you seem to be not interested in a serious way at all. So, why bring it up ?

To say: "I am a biochemical entity living my life on a lonely rock in space until cancer (scientifically proven !) wracks my cell structure and other biochemical entities take care of the decomposition of my biomaterial" - well, that's the most sad and boring WORLDVIEW I could imagine - ever. Cause it's nothing more than that: an extremely limited WORLDVIEW - like the religious concepts in the TV-show. It's plain old reductionism and materialism. Without any spirit, soul or love. Reminds me of Mengele, cutting childrens' eyeballs out of their skulls to collect "scientific evidence" for his PHD and the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institute (now Max-Planck-Institute here in Germany) - or sewing twins together back on back, just for ... well, what ? Those NAZI-scientists (and Mengele WAS IN FACT A SCIENTIST, one of the best students of the KWI, with a clearly stated "Research Program" in twin BIOLOGY) were quite determined BELIEVERS in doing good things for their nation and mankind in general to SOLVE THE JEWISH QUESTION IN A FINAL SOLUTION. They acted upon their "scientific knowledge" of concepts like RACE and BIOPOLITICS.

Just think again now - about the "stupid blonde" talking about "brotherly and sisterly love and evolutionary growth of emotion" etc. You may puke cause of that esoterical cliche-babble - and I can understand that. Those concepts should be FELT and ACTED upon, they're a bit stale in literal/verbal expression. They have to be experienced to be understood. I for myself had to smile, when the people in the TV-show started to laugh collectively and spontaneously despite their different concepts of afterlife. That's a rare moment in mankind for sure.

I am sure you get my point.

@Gallstones:

Impressive ,,, ... .

Your "personal philosophy" (what they're called in webtec-language, those posting-bottomliners ? ), suggests, you have experienced what I am talking about.

EDIT: ah, "signature" !!! :shifty: By the way: Tyrannical insulted Duchamp. He intended it and did it, knowing (nearly) nothing about modern conceptual art, without the slightest clue about its mechanics. Period. It's the same problem as in this thread. People who are insulting people they cannot really understand - or who are plain lazy to understand. The "Immigration Laws" of the US with its coupled "Mental Health Tests" seem to date back to the era of BIOPOLITICS, I mentioned above. The 1920ies and 1930ies. The immigration policy of New York was to establish scientific criteria to select only the "capable, powerful and potent" and reject the "unworth with inferior racial bloodline". Germany was very proud of its resolution of the "Laws of Nuremberg" about discrimination of Jews. Those laws qualified as scientifically based and ultra-modern. Also some US bureaucrats applauded the German biopolitical "progress" (until 1942 - at least officially). Well, what are Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib and Bagram today ? Concentration Camps to insult, degrade, torture and "scientifically" study the "enemy", the people, the US government cannot understand - aka middle-eastern culture and mentality ?
