NASAs rover Curiosity just posted this pic of old ruins

What do you think? Is this an old ruin from an ancient civilization? That's what I've been reading around the net today.

Hey Jess,

Which do you think requires more extraordinary and outlandish assumptions:

A) An odd rock formation due to natural erosion (of which millions of Earthly examples exist).
B) An ancient vanished Martian civilization of which all that can be found is a single oddly shaped rock.

Think carefully, and choose wisely.

Since fundamentalist Christians are more or less committed to the idea that life is unique to Earth, then they have to also commit to the idea that this object is not designed, even though it sure looks like it is.

Mighty small "ruins" - based on the full image, I think a GI Joe doll would tower over that rock. Martians must be pretty damn small ...

If only they could get the rover to sample that thing... I doubt it's anything more interesting than a funny-looking rock, but its form compared to the rocks around it says that something unusual happened to shape it that way. We might get some insight as to some interesting weather or erosion effects, if nothing else.

That's basically the essence of the problem here. The perspective of that picture could make it seem like its taken from high up and far away, but given that the Curiosity is about the size of a car, the perspective must be close up and near. With no distinguishing objects of known scale, the credulists leap onto the assumption that there's a large structure supporting their previously held belief that Mars had ancient civilizations.

Oooh! The Martians built miniature ruins!

The shadows are intriguing...
I have NO BELIEF in the existence of a God or gods. I do not have to offer evidence nor do I have to determine absence of evidence because I do not ASSERT that a God does or does not or gods do or do not exist.

Of course! They are using the same movie set they used for the Moon landing hoax.

The shadows seem to me to be caused by two separate items. That while from this angle it looks like one rock that is only being caused by the angle and in reality the higher part is a different rock set a bit back.

It is all that remains of the bowling alley. Those damn martian pins wouldn't go down for love nor money, and there they stand to this very day.

It is amazing, though, that the Martian landscape includes a perfectly formed oval with an arrow sticking out from its side.
