Of course it hums. It doesn't know the words.

Sir Bedevere: Whooooouuuuaaa!
Sir Lancelot: No no no, it's "Aaaaauuuugggghhhh" from the back of the throat.
Sir Bedevere: No I mean, "Whoooouuuuaaa!" as in surprise and alarm.
Sir Lancelot: Oh, you mean like, "AAAHH!"
Sir Bedevere: Yes, that's it. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Somebody suggested the cause for the sound might be small sewage pumping stations. While I suppose they might put out a hard-to-pinpoint humming sound when in operation, there was no references as to why he thought that would explain the Woodland Hum. Has anybody heard this elsewhere and/or is aware of such pumping stations in the village? :ask:

@tnjrp, no, I haven't. There must be alot of pumps in the open, grassy flatlands of Britain then. We'd have to check all the locations of this worldwide phenomenon ... . The most reasonable explanation I've come across was the crossing of ocean wave echo. Don't know, if this would be physically possible.

The second most reasonable explanation to me are manifestation/turbulence of Akasha Chronicle or Life Energy. The Power of St.Cuthbert, the warcries and moans of bloody Prehistorics/Britons/Scots/Saxons/Vikings. I am a woohead after all - and I am dead serious ... .

I somewhat doubt there's one single explanation for all the Hums -- it could well be a phenomenon caused by a number of different processes that get lumped together in the folklore, solely based on their apparent similarity. So that which might explain the Woodland case doesn't need to apply to any, never mind all, of the reported Hum cases.

There used to be gossip/rumours during the Cold War about the Soviets' 'beaming' very low frequency radio waves at western Europe. These were supposed to affect you subconsciously and give people a general feeling of non-well being. They used to say you could almost 'hear' the effect. Probably just rubbish, but this brought the memory back.
