Personally, I'd rather hope that if, for example, the Royal Navy actually wanted to cover up seeing something suspicious which they'd written down in the ship's log, they'd at least have the wit to make a doctored copy of the log as a replacement rather than just ditching the original and hoping no-one would notice.
