I'll make a falsifiable prediction. Stanley will have made a tidy sum in book sales by then and he wont give refunds.

Or, purely speculative, if Sirius A had any planets then it might be possible that some form of life originated there, evolved sapience, invented iPhone (the Sirian edition) and finally moved on to artificial habitats when things got too hot planetside. And now they are going to come to download some killer apps from the local App Store!

The alternative being the question of why would god have created so much wasted real estate!
It's indeed a wonder that never ceases to amaze! Maybe it's all an illusion -- after all nobody's been to this so-called Sirius for example

Not sure but I'm pretty certain it makes for a nasty anal probe.

Here's another - some fruitcakes will say that the aliens did arrive, met them (possibly did things to them :naughty2: ) and then went away again because "earth people weren't ready".

Isn't that the usual pattern?

Oh, bloody hell, little green men from outer space woo. Still, at least it's funnier than creationism.

I'm reminded of the wankery that was present in gigantic quantities in the infamous "ass raping space lizards" thread over at RDF. The clown who started that thread talked about so-called fucking "Pleideans" over there too, and I seem to remember pointing out to him that those stars are too young to have developed proper planetary systems, let alone planetary systems harbouring intelligent life.

Then of course there's the Zeta Reticuli mob. Now it so happens that the two Zeta Reticuli stars are solar analogues, but they're not as old (current astronomical estimates suggest they're only 2 billion years old) and they're also seriously deficient in metals (i.e., elements heavier than hydrogen or helium) which rather puts a damper on the idea of those stars having planets, if they formed from a gas and dust cloud that was metal-deficient. Plus, the stars form a wide binary system, and one that's part of a moving group of stars travelling in an eccentric orbit about the galactic centre of the Milky Way, which means that at the periapsis of the galactic orbit, the stars are just 17,000 light years from the galactic centre, in a part of the galaxy that's rather heavily populated with stars, and therefore more than a little problematic for life with respect to ambient radiation flux. This of course doesn't stop some people from claiming that the system is home to a bunch of anal-probing aliens.

I hadn't heard of the Sirius woo Darkchilde mentions above before, though I gather that Sirius is mythologically important to an African tribe, which resulted in a flurry of woo-laden publications when the people in question were studied by anthropologists.

But if Stanley looks like a complete twat how we will notice the transition?

Don't get discouraged, after all, it's only a "tentative" date. Like we said, "so promise you'll call tomorrow", and they said "uh huh, sure, l8r".

This UFO nuttery is quite the same as the religious doomsday nuttery; the 'leaders' set a date, it comes and goes, some people are disappointed and leave or form splinter groups, others keep on truckin', and then there's a new date. And it goes on and on and on.

BTW - what time zone are they visiting first today? I'm going to work soon.
