If you think the entire universe is a figure of your imagination, then yes. If not, then no.

Why don't you just make up your own mind? We've given you plenty of idea's/arguments to consider. You've also got google at your disposal.

OK can you explain what is "existence" and how can it be outside of me (not selfevident)?
Also reasons why solipsism is "probably false"

    existence n.

    2. The fact or state of continued being.

    3. A mode or manner of existing.
    4. Specific presence; occurrence.

You have not yet offered your reasons why solipsism is, or might be, true. :ask:

But when I think of existnece I think of (sometimes) something obvious/selfevident
so it sort of seems to me like existence and selfevidence are synonymous.

Does your pet dog exist?

Options:

1) It exists inside your head.
2) It exists in the real world externally to you.
3) It doesn't exist.

Obviously 3 is wrong, and we'll leave 2 for now.

Lets assume that your pet dog is, in fact a figure of your imagination. Where is your imagination coming from? Are you hooked up to some sort of matrix? Or is your brain just the computer being used in some alien kid's game of the sims?

Even if you can only be sure of your own existence, something is bound to exist externally to you. Stuff exists OK?

Maybe you should study some more science instead of philosophy. If you understood a bit more about astronomy, chemistry, biology and maybe a tiny bit of quantum mechanics... You'd probably appreciate the vast size and complexity of the universe enough to stop trying to justify fitting it all into one human brain...

More like a jellyfish, floating on the tides, cast first this way, and then that. Eventually dying and desiccating on a beach.
The squirming facts exceed the squamous mind
and yet, relation appears

Question

#97  Postby asdfjkl » Dec 31, 2011 11:45 pm

The more I think about it, the more it seems something has to be self-evident to be true.
I know it makes sense that there are things that can be inferred about which are not self-evident but it makes sense within the mind only.
How do you know for certain that what makes sense in your mind actually makes sense in reality?
Can anything be believed outside of what is 100% certain?
