My question for jamest is:

Did you actually think you would get "serious questions" here with an OP like that?
Why do you think that?

And why has he chosen to ignore quite a few serious questions?

After all of these years, I'd expect you to know that I like a bit of banter. And, to be honest, I think that there has to be an element of that in here otherwise the yawns from the atheists would outnumber the thumbs-ups for them. That wouldn't be good for my robes business, of course.

Still get the idea I'm not quite getting through here.

edit: Let's try this way. Have you considered the possibility that, while a person's post might be taking the piss out of what you're saying to some degree, the essential point of it could be correct?

Okay, I'll answer your questions surr...

surreptitious57 wrote:
When was the last time you had a serious mind change and what was the reason

What's 'serious' in life, really? Our philosophies are so far apart that I'm being serious. If you're asking me when I came to realise this, then I still cannot answer you as it's been a progressive journey and the differing landscapes have all affected me. I have had 'this' in me from an early age - I distinctly remember asking myself profound philosophical questions at the age of about 11. According to stories from my deceased mother, I was taking radios apart (not simply destroying them) at the age of 2, so go figure. I guess there's a mental label out there for me somewhere, go ask the experts. I would simply decribe myself as someone with a deeply inquisitive mind, so deep that nothing but the first cause would ever interest me.

What in your opinion are the greatest and least of human virtues

Indifference/sloth is the least, because if you are that way inclined then it's unlikely that you'll ever address any of the others. Indeed, I've been worried about myself in recent years because I'm becoming more indifferent. I don't ever want to be in a state where I cannot be bothered to change anything, not unless I've reached the summit of my climb.

Who is the non philosophical historical figure you most admire

Upon the basis of my limited knowledge, I would say Ernest Shackleton. The story of his doomed Antarctica expedition in 1914 reads like a script Hollywood would be hard-pressed to imagine.

Have you ever seriously contemplated giving it up

Of course. Indeed, I post much less frequently these days.

Where on Earth do you get your excessive mental energy from

That's something I've never asked myself, as I've always assumed everyone's minds continue to work whilst they're conscious. I just assumed that their priorities were different to mine.
Name one thing you would change about the education system

DEFINITELY to have philosophy/reasoning in there on a basis as important+ as reading/writing/math. To get kids to reason and contemplate profound questions in life, and consider solutions/attitudes already expressed. I'm a strong advocate of that, for sure, and not just for theistic reasons.

No. Well, yes, but not any more, because I now Know for sure that I'm right.

Believe it or not, I've spent the bulk of my life as an atheist/agnostic. Which means, I know exactly what you're thinking. Which means, I know why you're wrong.

No. Well, yes, but not any more, because I now Know for sure that I'm right.

Was your inability to express your ideas in a concise, considered way the thing that gave you this sense of Knowing you're right?

Believe it or not, I've spent the bulk of my life as an atheist/agnostic. Which means, I know exactly what you're thinking. Which means, I know why you're wrong.

If you did, you wouldn't have so much trouble explaining yourself. Just the fact that you have the view that atheists must be emotionless robots makes it hard for me to believe you've ever been one.

Wait! For a minute there I was going to apologise for being a retard - unable to express myself clearly/sufficiently. And then... eureka - I realised that it wasn't me who was the retard.

If there's someone involved who's having trouble understanding what's going on, it's most definitely you. Though you could argue I'm retarded because part of me still somehow believes you actually will express yourself clearly and sufficiently one day.

In any conversation which occurs between two parties, the retarded one is generally the one with the least experience and hence the smallest vocabulary. I'm not like you, as I haven't lived in one mental place all of my life, as you [seemingly] have. As I said earlier tonight, the bulk of my life (about 2/3rds) was spent as an agnostic/atheist (certainly, not as a theist). I'm a well-travelled man of the mind. Therefore, I refuse to be the one held responsible here for our difficulties in conversing with one another.

If anyone here needs to make any special efforts, it's you. You see, having lived your mindset for 2/3rds of my life, I speak your lingo well. Whereas you've never been to my land of the mind. Therefore, shake off your sloth and up your game, squire.

Sure doesn't look like it.

I don't think you have any sort of real philosophy worked out behind all your bluster, that's the clearest reason I can see for your inability to explain it. You should feel responsible, because you never actually say anything. All you do is bluff and bluster, that's all you've done in these last few threads besides the garbled OP's. Seriously, I'm not joking, read the threads. You haven't said anything.

If anyone here needs to make any special efforts, it's you. You see, having lived your mindset for 2/3rds of my life, I speak your lingo well.

No, you really don't. You honestly come across as someone who has no idea that they have no idea what they're talking about.

Whereas you've never been to my land of the mind. Therefore, shake off your sloth and up your game, squire.

Sorry peasant, your land of the mind doesn't seem to have done you much good, so I won't be going there myself.

One of the things I find surprising about you is how you can so easily gravitate from shoving a badger up somebodys arse one minute to saying you mean no harm to anyone the next. I much prefer you when you are in angry mode because that is how
I am used to you. You being nice causes me confusion but I will have to get used to accepting it I suppose

I know many take the piss out of you and think you talk complete bollocks but I see a very inquisitive mind
at work here. And for this at least you deserve recognition even if I am the only one likely to give it to you

You mentioned indifference. I have myself become more detached over time. I do not think that it is a good idea
to waste mental energy trying to change the world. The only thing I can change is myself. So that is all I focus on

No facts involved. Even if it were relevant, I'd have no reason to take your word for it, especially when you presume things about me. And again, 20 years of poorly explaining yourself and then verbally lashing out at them isn't something to brag about.

Good night, squire. I've never held any ill feeling towards anyone, even those whom have held ill feelings towards me.

I don't know who holds ill feelings towards you. But it's not particularly relevant to anything, so I don't really care either.

Any more than I would hold ill feelings towards a vulture which hovered around me during my physical demise. It's just what vultures do.

And I shouldn't be surprised to see a Christian climbing up on his cross. It's just what Christians do.

And if you'd had any sort of grasp on how you come across in your posts, you'd understand why. Instead you just insist that you're always right and there's no value in any sort of criticism of anything you have to say.

Remember that, if nothing else. I come here, expecting nothing, always.

Judging from the other thread on killing time, it's because you can't think of anything better to do.
