"The intellectual conscience", excerpt from The Gay Science,

One of my favorite aphorisms by Friedrich Nietzsche.

2. The intellectual conscience

I keep having the same experience and keep resisting it every time. I do not want to believe it although it is palpable: the great majority of people lack an intellectual conscience. Indeed, it has often seemed to me as if anyone calling for an intellectual conscience were as lonely in the most densely populated cities as if he were in a desert. Everybody looks at you with strange eyes and goes right on handling his scales, calling this good and that evil. Nobody even blushes when you intimate that their weights are underweight; nor do people feel outraged; they merely laugh at your doubts. I mean: the great majority of people does not consider it contemptible to believe this or that and to live accordingly, without first having given themselves an account of the final and most certain reasons pro and con, and without even troubling themselves about such reasons afterward: the most gifted men and the noblest women still belong to this "great majority." But what is goodheartedness, refinement, or genius to me, when the person who has these virtues tolerates slack feelings in his faith and judgments and when he does not account the desire for certainty as his inmost craving and deepest distress ꟷ as that which separates the higher human beings from the lower.

Among some pious people I have found a hatred of reason and was well disposed to them for that; for this at least betrayed their bad intellectual conscience. But to stand in the midst of this rerum concordia discors [Discordant concord of things: Horace, Epistles, I.12.19.] and of this whole marvelous uncertainty and rich ambiguity of existence without questioning, without trembling with the craving and the rapture of such questioning, without at least hating the person who questions, perhaps even finding him faintly amusing ꟷ that is what I feel to be contemptible, and this is the feeling for which I look first in everybody. Some folly keeps persuading me that every human being has this feeling, simply because he is human. This is my sense of injustice.

Your OP and your posting history together would conform to any standard dictionary definition of irony.

I don't think so.

The writer/speaker isn’t necessarily aware of the joke. You missed that bit. That’s what makes irony funny.

It has no inputs. Not surprisingly, you can't check the outputs against anything. Some irony meter, eh?

There's a lot of 'coppery' there...
I have NO BELIEF in the existence of a God or gods. I do not have to offer evidence nor do I have to determine absence of evidence because I do not ASSERT that a God does or does not or gods do or do not exist.

The English translations were usually out on loan at Sydney Uni's Fisher Stack, but I had no problem laying my hands on their untranslated Nietzsche offerings. That was about 40 years ago, so I am a bit hazy on detail now. I do remember that the lecturer who took the history courses on the Weimar Republic and the rise of German fascism focused on him. He would, I suppose. He always wore a black leather jacket. He also hailed from the USA and had lost an arm during a motorbike accident.

At the time it occurred to me that quite an industry could spring from Nietzche's metaphoric style, the market for it being chiefly those who had pretensions to become philosophers, but not the ability. Many of them are found among enthusiasts and enemies of postmodernism - the ones who have no idea about what postmodernism is at any rate.

For those who want to save a lot of time, here is all you need to know of Nietzsche's works in under six minutes.

Funny video, but I was always under the impression that Nietzche wasn't actually an anti-semite.

He certainly was not. (1:17) "These accursed anti-Semite deformities shall not sully my ideal!"

That said, the bit about Jews and mawkishness (0:17) is an actual quote from Book V of his Die fröhliche Wissenschaft, and it is one of numerous others that have been seized upon to portray him as an anti-Semite. It's what you get when you resolutely insist on expressing a philosophy almost exclusively on the wings of metaphor, aphorism and poetry; coherence flies out of the window, which makes it all the easier for readers to select whatever fits their prejudice and ignore or reinterpret what doesn't. Christians had almost 1700 years practice of doing exactly that since the First Council of Nicaea, so there is an ancient and strong tradition of it.

Thanks, I totally missed the anti- in that
