Or why people in all kinds of societies felt happy with slaves/unpaid servants who were from any 'other' group, whether that's a particularly different race, a neighbouring race ('Aryans' vs 'Slavs'), 'foreigners' of the same effective 'race' whether from a different country or a different village, prisoners of war, people from a lower class or caste, or a different gender.
In that sense, being black isn't actually anything special, but simply one of the more obvious visual differences.
