Anak Krakatau December 2018

#1  Postby newolder » Dec 24, 2018 2:01 pm

The volcano caused a landslide into the sea that produced the tsunami. The fraction of island that slipped is noticeable in the following gif:

Here is a comparison between images collected on 11 December and 22 December. We can see that a large part of the Anak Krakatau Island is missing. This is the most probable cause of the deadly tsunami, a landslide.

Saw a video yesterday someone was live recording a music concert on their phone when a wave crashes through from behind the stage washing the whole band and their equipment into the crowd before it catches to the user and the image cuts out.

Scary stuff.

Give this volcano a few more decades and this event will be seen as a nothing burger. Just Google the effects from the 1883 eruption. That event resulted in the whole above sea level part of the mountain evaporating, and the rebuilding process began almost immediately. This is a majorly dangerous volcano.

Yep, the 1883 shoreline contour on the gif is telling.

Tragic event. I heard one of the survivors saying words to the effect that they 'thought they would be safe here...'

Not that far from an active volcano.

I doubt they were really thinking at that moment. That whole place is Tsunami territory in general. It's the second this year. It's also an earthquake zone.

Living in that region has been a gamble since, well, forever. This pivot point in earths plates is broken like a boiled egg shell. Because of a volcano living next door (geographically) to the subject earth pimple we, as a species, nearly cashed out. When another massive eruption in the region happens us amateur astronomers will be fucked for years, but sunsets/sunrises will be otherworldly. I’ve read that filtering effects from high alitude particulates from the 1883 eruption made the moon look green, or blue. Crops will fail across whole hemispheres for a couple years.

Krakatau is the child of Krakatoa, for those that did not know. It's the now lively remnants.

While true the magma chamber fueling this volcano is the same one that formed and fueled the 1883 event. No matter what we call it this is the same volcano. The cone is just an artifact of the process.
