Farewell Feynman Diagrams?

#1  Postby twistor59 » Sep 18, 2013 10:51 am

Maybe...let's wait and see

Physicists have discovered a jewel-like geometric object that dramatically simplifies calculations of particle interactions and challenges the notion that space and time are fundamental components of reality.

They are looking to emasculate twistor's avatar with touchy feely crystals.

Hmmm, I'm not going to even begin to claim I understand any of this, but if someone would like to try and simplify it so that a layman could understand, I'm all ears. (well...not ALL ears...but, you know)

As loosely as I can gather, they have discovered an N-dimensional geometric shape from which you can mathematically derive the different fundamental forces of nature. In other words you can use it as a model to describe the shape of space at the smallest scales.

Or something like that.

I found this. I took a handful of Aspirin and watching now.

UPDATE: The Aspirin is having no effect. :?

Does this relate to the E8 Lie group at all? Garrett Lisi was working on an exceptionally simple theory of everything which also related fundamental interactions geometrically.
Why do you think that?

I doubt it, it's related to the Grasmannian stuff that Arkani-Hamed has been evangelising for some time, and which grew out of the twistor-string models.

Would like to listen to the lecture that CdP linked but at work. Damn!

Oh here are the slides. OK, just worked out for N=4 Supersymmetric Yang Mills theory so far (N is the number of supercharges - see the twistor string thread. When I look at that thread, I can't see any of the fucking diagrams any more. It's been fucked since the server move :( )

Anyway, I'm not burning my QFT books just yet

Not sure it is. Any resemblance to a real crystal is coincidental.
That doesn't make it correct, though, just not necessarily woo, any more than E8 was woo.
