I spend too much time heaping praise on Brian Greene. I love the way he writes. Despite his overenthusiasm for string theory, I think his popular science writing is a great balance between walking you through the history of physics and confronting you with the tougher details of our modern understanding of it. His tv stuff is always a little less detailed than his books but he's still a fantastic host for this kind of stuff.
