Yes, cheese is a disgusting product of animal suffering.

(And now the body count is two. When will this pointless slaughter end?)

Incidentally, Louis Theroux did a great documentary about this a while ago.

The sad thing was that it seemed that in this case, it was the only way they could think of to avoid the land being turned over to farmland and losing the habitats of the actual wild animals that shared the reserve.

Not only SA. How about neighbour Zimbabwe:

Dentist who illegally killed Cecil the lion blames local guides for the scandal

A Minnesota man has been accused of illegally killing a famed lion in Zimbabwe.

Walter James Palmer of Eden Prairie, Minnesota has been named by Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force as the shooter of Cecil, a 13-year-old prized lion. He is now wanted by Zimbabwe officials on poaching charges.

The lion was protected and the subject of a decade long study by the Wildlife Unit of Oxford University in the UK. He was outfitted with a GPS collar and was killed in Hwange National Park. The Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority and the Safari Operators Association said that two men were charged with poaching in connection to Mr Palmer.

He will no doubt claim ignorance and blame the guides, but that's about as valid as a sex tourist blaming a cambodian pimp when he is caught with a child.

The dentist is pretty much ruined - seems he had a rap for sexual harassment as well - and illegal hunting. I'd love an hour with him in a locked room and a pair of pliers for some 'dental' work on his teeth.

Douchebag already plead guilty, did a year's probation and paid a (measly) fine for illegally shooting a black bear in the States and lying about it to US Fish and Wildlife Services. I struggle to believe he had no idea the lion hunt was an illegal one too considering the concerted effort to destroy the collar. When you spend $55,000 on a lion hunt it's to kill a special lion, usually black maned. Otherwise you just spend $20,000 (or $10,000 on a female.) The hunters lured Cecil, the black maned lion, not Jericho, the other mature lion in the area, who had less of a mane and was blonder. Cecil was absolutely their target.

Anyways, here he is (with Jericho in behind, actually) in his last photo, taken about a month ago:

And from now on he'll be on someone's wall.

Yes, that would be true bravery...or foolishness. If you make it out alive you have a real story to tell, and still get something to hang on the wall.

Protesters march outside Cecil the lion killer's offices
2015-07-30

Bloomington - A Minnesota dentist's killing of Zimbabwe's Cecil the lion just outside a national wildlife preserve has unleashed death threats and a global firestorm of hate messages on social media.

About 200 people protested on Wednesday outside the suburban Minneapolis office of Walter Palmer, 55, calling for him to be extradited to Zimbabwe to face charges.
...

...
Bloomington Police are investigating threats against Palmer, whose location is not known. Because many of the threats were made online, police are having difficulty determining their origins and credibility.

A small memorial of stuffed animals stood in the entry door to the building that houses Palmer's dental practice. Signs taped to the door said "Rot in Hell" and "Palmer there is a deep cavity waiting for you!"

Demonstrators called for Palmer's arrest and asked people not to use his dental practice.
"Walter, you are a murderer, you are a terrorist," said Rachel Augusta, a Minneapolis resident and mentor coordinator at the Animal Rights Coalition, which organised the protest.

The proper punishment for his crime is ten years in a zimbabwean prison. He should be extradited like any other criminal.

Yep. Palmer's deed was altogether vile and selfish, but the over-the-top response of some of his detractors is in the realms of comedy farce.

Hate to link to the Mail site but they seem to have scooped this story:

A British banker who shot a lion on a ‘trophy hunting’ holiday should be stripped of his knighthood, animal rights campaigners demanded yesterday.
Tory donor Sir David Scholey, a former director of the Bank of England, posed by the bloodied corpse of a male lion he apparently shot for fun in Zambia – and even defended the killing.
Photographed in semi-darkness, apparently soon after the hunt, the millionaire leaned back against the dead animal’s body, while a wound on its side oozed blood.

Unless taking a stand consists of making absurd and inaccurate accusations, and terrorizing people with death threats... I don't really understand how this represents 'taking a stand'.
