The German general election

#1  Postby Scot Dutchy » Dec 06, 2016 5:18 pm

Mutti has started the ball rolling.

Angela Merkel calls for burqa ban 'wherever legally possible' in Germany

The full-face veil should be banned, wherever it is legally possible,' Chancellor tells party

Angela Merkel has called for a burqa ban in Germany and said the refugee crisis “must never be repeated” while making her pitch for a fourth term as Chancellor.

Addressing her conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, Ms Merkel said she would support a nationwide prohibition on Islamic veils covering the face.

"The full-face veil is not acceptable in our country," she told delegates in Essen, sparking rapturous applause. "It should be banned, wherever it is legally possible."

Weak. As Lak says, its just pandering to the right.

She should be calling for a ban on face coverings in public, wherever legally possible. Calling for a ban on a specific face covering of course means that other face coverings can be used instead. She needs to make an argument about why people not having face coverings of any sort in public should be a thing.

This is just the beginning for Mutti. Never underestimate her. (I must admit I do have a certain admiration for her).

Would you be calling her Vati if she was a man?
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

He wouldn't be calling her Angela.

Do the number of people wearing burqa's even reach triple figures in the entire of Germany?. I'm not actually against requiring people to show their faces when using public services. The burqa should be treated exactly the same way as a crash helmet. Not illegal but bloody weird to wear while working down the streets, a reason for the police to stop you and completely reasonable to ban in courts or other public services. It should also be reasonable for any private business to require you to show your face

This is not even a hot topic in discussion in Germany with regard to the election.

I disagree strongly with the patriarchal purity culture that underpins veiling, but disagree even more with needless restrictions on religious freedom (needless generally being anything short of direct harm). This is shameless pandering to the AfD's base, and if the Bundestag's craven enough to pass it, I hope the Constitutional Court strike it down.
I don't believe in the no-win scenario.
