Cardioretinometry

#1  Postby ramseyoptom » Mar 15, 2011 10:48 pm

I have mentioned in another thread the existence of this form of 'treatment'. So to fill you all in here is a short resume.

Dr Syd Bush a Hull based UK Optometrist has 'discovered' that large doses of Vitamin C will reverse the effects of atherosclerosis.

A link to his wesite is here: http://www.cardioretinometry.com/

One of his 'proofs' is that a comparison of retinal photographs of before and after starting treatment with these megadoses is that changes can be seen in the retinal arteries, in that they improve in diameter and allow better blood flow. Now as you can imagine i am very used to assessing retinal photographs and also looking at real life retinas, and I can see no difference. Nor can quite a few of my collegues who have viewed his photographs.

However in some of his 'rants' and I use this term specifically because I and my collegues who subscribed to a professional only email system gets posts from him about his ideas which for the use of colour make a poster on this forum look subduded. He is now into a conspiracy in that the NHS, big Pharma, and Doctors do not want him to publise his efforts at will reduce either their profits or peoples dependancy on their expertise, because heart disease prevention will be taken over by optometrists and cheap Vitamin C

see here for the conspiracy: http://www.medicalscamsexposed.com/
and: http://www.nhsscam.co.uk/

I don't know what else to say.

If you cannot disprove Dr Bush, then why bash him. You said that you can see no difference in the pictures, maybe you need to try the theraphy then you may be able to see the changes.

He needs to be "bashed" for not having any evidence for his strange claims.
The only connection between the retina and the heart is that some melanopsin-expressing "ipRGC"s (intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells have some influence on heart rate, so that you are pumping slightly more blood when your eyes are open in daylight, just because they are open.

I do hope we're witnessing a very dry sense of humour here, because if we aren't ...

Maybe, but if so, it was so dry that it frizzled up and blew away in the wind!

It is up to him to prove his assertions. The retinal photographs he has presented do not,as far as anyone can see, do that. The changes he mentions are within the normal variations of retinal photography.

His doctorate (AFAIK) is not from a recognised university but from a known by post scam as is the professorship that he claims.

To update you.
Since the original scepticism
It is no shame to admit that early examples of the differences before and after the nutrition
were not easily seen. The latest of course, can be seen by those who are partially sighted.
The aim is to keep people safe by monitoring 1% changes because 25 years of progressive 1%
annual deterioration equates to a 25% increase in arterial blockages - usually fatal.
To expect 98% risk reduction of coronary thrombosis heart attack and stroke retinal photography
is needed every six months usually. This is real prevention and 50% life extension seems a reasonable
expectation at any age of entry according to life insurers´actuarial tables.

Entry to the University Doctorate course is available for qualified primary health care professionals

It would appear that scepticism should be directed instead, to the rest of the physicians who continue to die at
the same rate as their patients from the same heart disease whilst claiming to provide prevention.

From the Mayo Clinic:

For adults, the recommended dietary reference intake for vitamin C is 65 to 90 milligrams (mg) a day, and the upper limit is 2,000 mg a day. Although too much dietary vitamin C is unlikely to be harmful, megadoses of vitamin C supplements may cause:

Diarrhea
Nausea
Vomiting
Heartburn
Abdominal bloating and cramps
Headache
Insomnia
Kidney stones

Remember, for most people, a healthy diet provides an adequate amount of vitamin C.

Because nothing screams "Medical Miracle" as much as an pseudonymous series of syndicated newspaper fluff pieces columns.

Megadose Vitamin C only cures an excessively heavy wallet - given that the excess is excreted, unmetabolized, in urine, it's literally pissing away your money.

Read this.

Seriously.

The abstract and introduction are pure fucking comedy gold - if you take a keen eye towards the traditional claims of pseudo-scientists and charlatans into account.
