1.Thresholds of Peace. German prisoners and the People of Britain. 1944-1948 - Matthew Sullivan
2. Escape from Germany - Aidan Crawley
3. Applying Cognitive Linguistics to Second Language Learning and Teaching - Jeanette Littlemore
4. Food in History - Reay Tannahill
5. The Cyclist Who Went Out In the Cold - Tim Moore
6. Cognitive English Grammar - Günther Radden & René Dirven
7. The Marches: A Borderland Journey Between England and Scotland - Rory Stewart
8. Lingo: A Language Spotter's Guide to Europe - Gaston Dorren
9. The Blitz: The British Under Attack - Juliet Gardiner
10. Melmoth the Wanderer - Charles Maturin
11. Seeds of Earth - Michael Cobley
12. An Iron Wind: Europe Under Hitler - Peter Fritzsche
13. Speaking our Minds: Why Human communication is Different, and How Language Evolved to make it Special - Thom Scott-Phillips
14. In the Land of Giants: A journey through the Dark Ages - Max Adams
15. Conversational Repair and Human Understanding - Makoto Hayashi, Geoffrey Raymond & Jack Sidnell (Eds.)
16. Indirect Reports and Pragmatics: Interdisciplinary Studies (Perspectives in Pragmatics, Philosophy & Psychology) - Alessandro Capone (Ed.) (Re-read)

No. 14 was very engaging. A Professional archeologist tours some of the dark-age sites of Britain and Ireland. It is easy to overlook just how much stuff is out there, and the effects that those years and those peoples had and continue to have on Britain and Ireland. The author is, in addition to being extremely knowledgeable about the field (as one would expect), also a talented writer. One insight that he really brought out was the way in which our modern car-bound sensibilities color our view of landscape.
The ancient kingdom of Dal Raita, covering N. Ireland and the Western Isles of Scotland seems very pragmatic when viewed from the standpoint of sea-going peoples. The communities that are now isolated at the ends of peninsulas and on islands seem a lot less lonely when you shift perspective and see them as clustered around a northern Mare Nostrum.

No. 15 was a fantastic (if technical) collection of chapters of how interactants in real time deal with peturbations in talk. Rather than see spontaneous talk as 'corrupt' and 'degraded' (Chomsky, 1965), these authors demonstrate that the processes of repair are orderly and systematic, and that the restarts, hesitations, rephrasings and repetitions that are massively present in all spontaneous talk actually facilitate interaction, and that spoken interaction would be a brittle and difficult business without them.
(I can't claim to have read all of the chapters, but I read most of them, so I think it's fair to include this book on this list...)

No. 16, Similar in it's level of technical language and exposition, and equally fascinating in it's investigations of this central human activity of reported speech. We talk, and we quite often talk about talking. It is hard to imagine any stretch of interaction that does not refer to previous talk in some way. I feel smarter for having read this book.
(Similar to no.15, I can't claim to have read all chapters, but will include it on this list.)
