What would be interesting to know is a bit of the back-story, in terms of why getting closer or launching some other form of attack (artillery was mentioned a couple of posts back) weren't considered better options. Maybe the target area was under observation and the window of opportunity was unexpected and likely to be short?

The amount of elevation required to make that shot.... how did he even scope in on him?

IDK if this has been mentioned already but this shot was taken to prevent an ISIS attack instead of calling in an air strike.

Which would you prefer... a single sniper shot to a commander to halt an attack.

a few air strikes

allow ISIS to carry out their attack

I assume you, like I think most reasonable people, will find the first option the best. In which case it certainly is wonderful that there are people capable of such feats and equipment to make it possible.

Assuming it was an ISIS member.

Is there any good reason, aside from your known biases, to think he wasn't?

I agree with this.

It isn't records like it's baseball - it's records like it's long range shooting competitions - which it is. We keep records of those who have the tightest groups at various ranges, and on who scores the most points on a course of fire, and on who has the longest shots against stationary targets, and against moving targets - and against unpredictably moving targets, i.e. sniper targets.

Many top snipers are also top competitive shooters - so it really isn't surprising at all.

So this record includes people who are shooting at non-living moving targets in non-combat situations?

No - that is the record for moving targets in a non-combat setting.

The point is that records are kept in recognition of achievement at difficult tasks. Whether it's something as inane as how many pushups a person can do in a minute or long-range sniping, records are kept.

Elevated scope base on the rifle. Most sniper rifles have 20mil or 30mil elevated bases - essentially wedge-shaped bases that impart a correction to the entire optic to allow longer range shots than most scopes on a flat base have adjustment room for.

Pushups, that should be interesting, record and topic. But no climbing without ropes!

As a person who has done an incredible amount of shooting (12-guage shotgun only (Skeet Shooting)) this guy’s skill is simply amazing!

I doubt that I could even hit a barn with a rifle, never fired one.

Bravo to him and to the other record holders.

Furthest I ever shot at was 800m with a L96A1. There is a special kind of skill to people who can shoot consistently at that sort of range. I'd gone from nailing targets at 400m with nice groups under 25mm to being happy if I hit the target at all. The ballistics and windage starts interfering with simple straight shooting at that sort of range, changing it from simply lining up and breathing properly, easy squeezy, bang to, what's the terrain, wind, temperature, humidity, recent weather all like and it's starting to get into weighing up where your target will be when the bullet arrive ( It was around that time I realised I was best off where I was back in the MG section. Lots of room for missed rounds in the MG section).
My mind can't compute a shot over 4 times that distance.
The Bible is full of interest. It has noble poetry in it; and some clever fables; and some blood-drenched history; and some good morals; and a wealth of obscenity; and upwards of a thousand lies.

Has anyone read the Stephen Hunter sniper novels? It's been over 10 years ago, but I read I think the first 3 and really enjoyed them, good thrillers, cool character.

I'm gooder'n shit up to maybe 150-200 yards but that's about it. Beyond that I can't even see the target through the scope. This dude was massive awesome, we're not fucking worthy.

The military needs heroes for its PR. That's what gets the next generation of kids interested. In an era of drone strikes and questionable conflicts, they've probably been struggling for them.

Interesting aspect to this story...

Officials have refused to provide any other details about the incident, including where and when it occurred, citing operational security. But they maintain that the soldier was operating within the established limits of Canada’s so-called “advise and assist” mission in Iraq.

https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/201 ... story.html

The Canadian government has been denying that troops have been involved in active combat in Iraq and the opposition has been pressing the issue from time to time.
