OBITUARY: Microsoft Paint dead at 32

2017-07-25

Dearly beloved, we once again gather to mourn the loss of our dear friend and only form of computer entertainment in the 1980s – software Microsoft Paint, aka Paintbrush, at the age of 32.
...

...
Paint was steadfast, reliable and consumed almost no RAM. It was a favourite of early graphic designers, and helped pave the way for themto pursue careers as graphic designers, even if they moved on to the sexier Photoshoot utility.

But ultimately, Paint's creator had the last say. What the Good Microsoft giveth, the Good Microsoft taketh away. The company behind the Windows operating system this week announced the stalwart’s demise with the next update set to hit PCs. In the end, its age and simplicity could not be overcome in a world looking for the next best thing.

Always hated that program. I'm surprised it lasted this long. Still, one of my fav tumbler blogs, Jim'll Paint It.

If you're not too worried about the results, yeah. Gets upyou from point A to B I guess.
One of my first jobs the office used MS Paint for renderings. It was a harrowing experience.

Great for coloring black-and-white line art (e.g. scanned ink drawings) with quick and easy fills (bucket tool). And its got a nice little RGB color mixer.
Sure it's eclipsed by other bitmap editors (including free downloads like GIMP and Paint.NET), but I'll miss it for its nostalgia value.

I can't disagree for those that love/like it. It was just another thing I hated about MS crap. YMMV.

A brief death...!

Not quite dead: MS Paint rises from the ashes

Kyle Venktess, Fin24
2017-07-25

Popular application Microsoft Paint received a lifeline on Tuesday, after software giant Microsoft announced on Monday that it would be canning the simple design program in its next Windows update.

Less than 24 hours after announcing it would either removed or no longer update the retro computer application, Microsoft announced that they decided to keep the program “after an outpouring of love.”

“We’ve seen an incredible outpouring of support and nostalgia around MS Paint. If there’s anything we learned, it’s that after 32 years, Paint has a lot of fans. It’s been amazing to see so much love for our trusty old app,” said Megan Saunders, Windows General Manager for 3D for Everyone Initiative, in blogpost.

All this shows is that they don't know their user base. While Microsoft is here for the long haul, it's clear they don't have a plan.

They should offer the original version if people are nostalgic about it. That will change their minds. It appeared first in Windows 1.1.
