Funnily I saw a documentary years ago with an American anaesthetist who reckoned being under anaesthesia, which inhibits your brain function, that nothingness you feel between going under and coming back with what feels like a moment later, is what it's like to be dead, without the coming back part.

As an IT sort I think death is like a computer going off. What happens to all of those operating systems and programs? Nothing.

I see a couple of flaws in that methodology.

That nothingness which seemed to last literally no time at all when in fact around 8 hours had elapsed actually made me feel far more comforted regarding death. So you just get switched off and have no awareness of anything? Cool, I can do that. Kind of the opposite of what afterlife proponents feel about it, where the thought of nothingness appears to scare them rigid.

Lucky we have non volatile memory, imagine if even a percentage of the population after anaesthesia had brains that were a blank slate, all surgery would have to be carried out under local only, with movement a huge risk for the more delicate procedures.
